Garry
Wayne Tallent was born on October 27th, 1949 in Detroit (Michigan/
USA). He is a Scorpio. Garry has six brothers and sisters (four
brothers: Steve, Roger, Thomas and Charles; two sisters: Elaine and
Brenda). His family moved around in the eastern States of the US
until they moved to Neptune City (New Jersey/ USA), where Garry grew
up. He went to the same school as the actor Jack Nicholson.
Garry
Tallent loves the music of the 50s and 60s. When he heard Roy
Orbinson's "Running Scared" the first time he started to
cry, Garry once confessed. Garry is known to have a huge collection
of old records. It's said he has more than 3000 oldie-records.
The first thing he did when the E Street Band started to earn good
money, was to to buy a genuine 1948 Rock-Ola jukebox and singles to
fill it with.
Soon
he started playing the guitar. But when he heard Jimi Hendrix
playing he thought/ knew he was a hopeless case.
So
he bought his first bass and tought himself how to play. He played
the lines of the likes Paul McCartney, James Jamerson and Duck Dunn.
In an interview for the "Bass Player" magazine he said:
"I stole from everyone." Later in the 70s he took some
lessons from Jerry Jemmont who played on many Atlantic R&B
recordings.
It's said Garry hates 5-string basses. That's why you just can find
pictures of Garry on which he plays 4-string basses.
After
jaming with some local bands Garry joined Bruce's band "Dr.
Zoom & the Sonic Boom" in 1971. He was also in all the
following bands which Bruce has founded. When you see a show of
Bruce and the E Street Band you'll see Garry in the background the
most time. It's said that he's something like the calming influence
in the band. He once said: "Nobody notices I'm there - until
I'm not."
After
the E Street breakup in 1989 Tallent moved back to Nashville (Tennesse/
USA). There he established himself as a producer and as
studio bassist. He worked at the MoonDog Studios in West Nashville.
In
1995 Garry and the rest of the E Street Band got back together to
record several songs for the "Greatest
Hits" record. In 1999 they went back on the road for the
worldtour and in 2001/ 02 they recorded the new album - "The
Rising", which is followed by a large worldtour.
