Roy Bittan was born on July 02, 1949 in Rockaway Beach (New York (Long Island)/ USA).
His first attemps were to be a doctor. He attended Brooklyn College as a pre-med student, "but around the same time  I also decided I was going to play in a band a couple of nights a week and make some bucks."
In his childhood he has accordion lessons that had been adapted for piano. He found music to be a greater thing than medicine and switched his college major that way: he wanted to become a music teacher. By his last semester at college the session offers overwhelmed the schoolwork "I decided I didn't want to teach anymore. I wanted to do."

Before Roy joined the E Street Band in 1974 he even played together with Meat Loaf. But they just played a few gigs. Meanwhile he played with some other artists, too. He was an additional musician on Bon Jovi's first album ("Bon Jovi") and played on various albums of the Dire Straits, Peter Gabriel, Stevie Nicks and helped to arrange David Bowie's "Scary Mosters" LP and played the piano on his album "Station to Station"..
Like Max Weinberg Roy got known with Bruce because of the now famed ad in the "Village Voice" (it said: "Drummer (no jr. Ginger Bakers, must encompass R&B and jazz), pianist (classical to Jerry Lee Lewis), trumpet (must play r&b, Latin & jazz), violinist. All must sing. Male or female. Immed auditions for Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band (Columbia Records). Appel. 759-1610. 10 AM - 6 PM").

Roy Bittan replaced David Sancious. Ever since he and Bruce played together. After the E Street breack-up he was the only member (besides Patti Scialfa) who was "allowed" to play on Bruce's "Human Touch/ Lucky Town" tour in 1992/ 93.

In 1995 Roy and the rest of the E Street Band got back together to record several songs for the "Greatest Hits" record. In 1999 they went back on the road for the worldtour and in 2001/ 02 they recorded the new album - "The Rising", which is followed by a large worldtour.
