Here are my Public PGP keys

This is my new public key, for Windows versions of PGP (for Windows 95/98 and later). It does not use RSA (which most people will not have if they get the Freeware version of PGP from http://www.pgpi.org). PGP now has a Windows user interface and is very easy for anyone to install and use. Stop sending unencrypted messages all over the internet for the idly curious at the various nodes to read at their leisure!

Use hilite, copy and paste to save an entire block, including the "BEGIN" and "END" lines, to a file on your own computer. Use the PGP user interface to add the key to your key ring.

Here are the web addresses of the PGP key servers. Interaction with these is built into the pull-down menus of PGP ver 6 or so and later. You just have to be connected to the internet and the pulldown menus will do the work of posting your key for you.
ldap://keyserver.pgp.com, http://pgpkeys.mit.edu:11371, ldap://europe.keys.pgp.com:11370.

To Get PGP

PGP lets you send encrypted messages and to encrypt files for yourself that you keep. The command (in the DOS versions) for the latter is pgp -c yourfile.txt. For the former, you use someone's public key to send that person a message. That person uses his secret key to decrypt the message. Anyone can have anyone's public key, because the encrypted messages can only be decrypted by the one who holds the matching secret key. The public key is published as widely as possible, whereas the secret key is preferably kept password protected by its owner.

Freeware versions of PGP are available at the International PGP Web Site: http://www.pgpi.org. Version 2.6.3i for DOS (the final DOS version) may still be available.

How to use the DOS version

Once you have the Zip file, read the documentation in the following order: PGPdoc1.doc, Readme.doc and Setup.doc. Read some of PGPdoc2.doc and refer to it for details. You might want to read Politic.doc. (These are not MS-Word files, but plain text [ASCII] files)
But, to make it very simple, all you do is unzip everything to a directory on your hard disk such as c:\pgp. Add a path to it in your autoexec.bat file (make one if you don't have one - it's optional in Windows '95) as "path=c:\pgp" (don't use the quotes) and also put in your autoexec.bat file the two lines:
PGPPATH=C:\PGP
TZ=EST5EDT (if you are in the Eastern Time Zone. See PGPdoc1 and 2 if you are in another time zone)

The order of the three lines doesn't matter. Autoexec.bat goes in your C:\ directory. Restart your PC.
You can type pgp -h and pgp -k at the DOS prompt for more help, once you have done that. Read how to add peoples' public keys to your public key "ring" (a file, "pubring.pgp" in your pgp directory).

*
Commands (about all you need):
To generate your key pair: pgp -kg
To view the public rings in your key ring: pgp -kv
To clearsign a message for posting: pgp -sta yourmsg.txt
To sign and encrypt a message for a recipient: pgp -sea yourmsg.txt Jim Capj (to send to me. You only have to use "Jim" if I'm the only Jim in your public key ring)

(I described the above from using ver 2.6, not ver 2.6.3i. There may be slight differences.)

Buying a version of PGP

PGP can also be purchased from Network Associates, a company which now owns McAfee. Their URL is: http://www.nai.com.
However, the version of PGP offered for sale DOES NOT include RSA support! This really confuses matters for most purchasers. You will have to phone them up and ask for it specifically, as they have to pay a royalty to sell PGP with RSA. If you don't have a version with RSA (that came with all of the DOS freeware versions), it will be very difficult for you to talk to anybody! (or rather the old hands will have to make new public keys for the neophytes).
Call Network Associates at (408) 346-3045 or (800) 338-8754, and use extension 2488.
Ask for part number PPR-DRCT-NA-550, which was priced at $59.95 US, last I heard. Specify RSA.
