"The Best I Ever Had"
by mike velasco

The first thing I had in mind was to celebrate it in a special way just with my friends. My mom was also concerned about my birthday. Well, I never had a big one and I didn't expect this one will be. Maybe I just remembered one of my kiddie birthday parties where I invited my classmates then nobody came.

A week before my birthday, my mom asked if I wanted it to be held at the Clubhouse. Why a big event and who’s coming? But then I thought, it would be a reward for myself and also a way to invite those would-be guests in my wedding. With this in mind, I was grateful and excited over my parents offer. With no time to lose, I reserved the clubhouse. My sister Chel took charge of the Catering while I informed my guests. Three days before the party, I sent the invitations to all my guests.

At Seven o’ Clock, Orly, my cousin was the only one there. He owned a mobile sound system and brought it along. Moments later, people were beginning to arrive. Mr. Tiu and Twilight Harmony were the early birds, followed by our neighbors, Mau’s family and friends. While everybody was busy eating, I took pictures of my guests, table by table.

Twilight Harmony was the star of that night. They sang some Chinese and Broadway Songs. The audience loved it very much and the applause sounded perfectly. Mau surprised me with a song I never expected she will sing simply because it’s impossible to find the instrumental version of “Someone Like You”. When she sang the first few lines I knew I would cry because that song is very special and I never thought she would go out of her way to have it arranged specially made for me. After she sang, I hugged her tight and said, you got me there.

The Blowing of the Cake was like my childhood days. Marichu, my sister’s best friend lighted the candle for me and the rest sang Happy Birthday. We all clapped for the night and I thanked everyone who came.

That capped my last birthday as a Bachelor. Looking back now, I wouldn't have it any differently. It was very memorable indeed.
