I was
in the Guiding movement for five years, first as a Girl Guide
(1998-2000) and then as a Ranger (2001-02). I did not quite understood
Girl Guiding when I joined it, I was attracted by the uniform! On my
first Girl Guides meeting my Patrol Leader taught us all that was
required to pass the tenderfoot badge. Only by passing the tenderfoot
badge are we allowed to be inaugurated as Girl Guides. I remember
memorizing the organisation structure of WAGGGS and Malaysian Girl
Guides Association (MGGA) just to fulfill a tenderfoot requirement. I
knew I was part of an international organization, but never realized the
magnitude of it.
I have the internet to thank for widening my perspective on Guiding and
Scouting. I was doing research on my Second Class badge when I stumbled
upon the WAGGGS website. Eventually I was surfing the internet almost
everyday from one Scouting page to another, learning about my
Guiding/Scouting sisters in Australia, Canada, United States and United
Kingdom. But the only site on Girl Guiding in Malaysia that I could find
is the the official MGGA website. In 1999 during my year end holidays I
formulated a plan. I wanted to build a Girl Guiding website of my own,
and in it I would share all information about Guiding in Malaysia to the
world. The internet had given me the opportunity to learn so much about
Guiding/Scouting in other parts of the world, there was no reason why
others shouldn't have the equal opportunity to learn about Guiding in my
country.
Since I graduated from secondary school I am officially a non-member of
WAGGGS. But I strongly believe in the spirit of Guiding and Scouting. I
believe in the empowerment of young generations and women, I believe
that everyone has the power to contribute to the betterment of society
and I believe that knowledge and understanding is the key to making that
happen.
