August 4, 2001 - Columbia Gorge and still many hours from home
As I drove my new treasure home, the miles and desolation of the landscape made me think about how and what and WHY I made this decision.  But constant glances in my rear view mirror, looking into "that" face, with it's shining chrome grill smile staring back at me made me know that in my heart I had done the right thing.  Something about this car had tugged at me for a long time.  There's a "comic" nature to it, and yet a streamlined dynamics that was far ahead of it's years.

I've always liked old movies, cartoons, and old cars.
I'd done some restoration and customizing of a 1947 Chevrolet 1/2 ton pickup truck, so I knew what I was in for when I started looking for the Nash.  When I first began to look online, I would find a car that was somewhere farther in miles than I was willing to drive, or it was the wrong year or the wrong model or the wrong price.  But as luck would have it, when I least expected to find "the" 1951 Nash Statesman Airflyte, there it was....still a state away, but do-able.  This time I knew I had to have it, 2 years of looking, and wanting and wishing were about to become the reality of getting a dream.

I had hoped when I got there that the car would be in better shape.  Afterall, the ad did say.....
no rust, extra parts, straight and restorable.  Somehow, after a full days drive up the windy Columbia Gorge, towing a borrowed trailer I had hoped to find a little less rust and a lot more spare parts.  Thru tired eyes, I stared at the car and thought to myself, it's alot rougher than I thought it would be, and I thought for a brief moment about saying forget it...but then I looked at "that" face again.  I told myself, it IS the two door model I'd been searching for, and it IS basically straight, and the rust isn't TOO bad...and the holes in the floorboard only take up HALF of the floor.  I knew I could bring it back to the condition I wanted, but would I be able to find the parts I needed to do it.  I still don't know the answer to that question, but I guess I'm about to find out.  The search for the car is over, but now the real work begins.

If you can help me find the missing parts I need, please email me. I've set up a page on this web site listing the parts I'm searching for.
