House-building, as with many things in PNG, is a male-dominated sport. Similarly, men are responsible for sailing the big sailing canoes, catching fish and lying under shady trees. Women on the other hand are saddled with childbirth, cooking and working in the gardens, which are generally to be found clinging precipitously to a virtually perpendicular mountainside, accessed only by an hour’s scramble up a steep rocky path. The concept of feminism hasn't reached the south pacific yet....
