to youToasts

May you be in heaven a full half hour before the devil knows you're dead.

As you slide down the bannister of life, may the splinters never point the wrong way

May your right hand always be stretched out in friendship but never in want.

May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live.

May you live to be a hundred years with one extra year to repent.

May you get all your wishes but one so that you always have something to strive for.

Here's to wives and girlfriends. May they never meet!

The 19th century American poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, mentions wine more than 300 times in his works.

There is a 1600 year old bottle of wine on display in the Speyer Museum in Germany.

In 1870 the United States unknowingly exported Phylloxera (a louse that attacks roots of grape vines) to Europe which virtually destroyed all of Europe's vineyards. As a consequence, all European vineyards had to be grafted to native American rootstock, which is Phylloxera resistant, and replanted.

Hundreds of wine bottles have been found on the floor of the Atlantic among the wreckage of the Titanic. The intense pressure spared the bottles but pushed the corks inside releasing the wine to the ocean.

According to Vintage Views, the number of grapes varieties in the world totals over 5000.

Thomas Jefferson was an avid collector of recipes and wine. With his knowledge of Europe's finest vineyards, Jefferson was the wine advisor to several presidents and, at George Washington's request, he selected the first wines to be stocked in the White House. In Jefferson's writings, researchers have found grocery lists, wine inventories and recipes. They discovered receipts for hundreds and hundreds of bottles of wine.
