The path of the Inka Sun - PERU

The Awakening

THE BEGINNING
Our Trip starts from different countries in the American continent, creating an invisible connection of love and celebration, carrying the fragrance of the rays of the Inka sun. The awakening is a labor of intense personal purification and transformation....
....Peace....

OUR RETREAT CENTER:
Our place of communion is a jewel indeed. Our retreat center is in the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Inkas. Situated between Qosqo (Cusco) and Machu Picchu, our guest houses offer grace and comfort enhanced by the aura of the Andes.

The guest cottages are newly-built in traditional 16th century Spanish colonial style. They are constructed from natural materials and indigenous handwork that has been used by Peruvians for thousands of years. Willka T'ika offers full dining facilities, along with open-air or covered areas for meetings, dance, and yoga. There is a massage, or healing room and modern bathroom facilities with hot showers.

The gardens are breathtaking, lavishly filled with masses of flowers, shrubs, and flowering plants, along with Andean medicinal herbs and indigenous grains and vegetables. There are lawn areas for Tai Chi, as well as a large meditation hut and huge walk-around spiral. This garden paradise also features special sites used for traditional ceremonies, such as offerings to Pachamama, the Mother Earth. Stroll through the floral wonders or meditate under the 500-year-old Lucma tree as you absorb the energies of the mountains and rivers of Peru's Sacred Valley.

"We live in a universe that is multi-dimensional, many manifestations of God are possible. God manifests himself in many ways... God lives in many forms... God Speaks many tongues... But man is limited by his personal vision... man does not see the many dimensions available to him... he suffers his whole life because he does not recognize the existence of God and his endless dimensions...
The path of the Inka sun, begins with one thought, with one purpose... this thought and this purpose is to find who you are... This is the beginning of the path.... this is the beginning towards the light...."

Machu Picchu - A Shamanic ceremony prepares us for our ultimate destination, Machu Picchu. A train takes us to the sub-tropical area of Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu. Expert guides lead us through the stone city and later in the day, after the crowds leave, there will be time for personal meditation and exploration.

Machu Picchu - should be considered one the wonders of the world.... Machu Picchu - was a place were the wise Inkas would arrive after a long and difficult journey into the Self... their only purpose was to discover the beauties of the self... and Machu Picchu - is exactly that... a spiritual experience...

Q'enko

As we walked around the great rock structure, we slipped into a narrow, cold and barely lit tunnel. The tunnel led deep into the center of the temple, where we began to see clearly a great stone platform that was used for offerings to the sun and the PACHAMAMA (mother earth). Overlooking the platform was a hole in the rock that allowed the sunlight to enter from above. As we exited the other end of the tunnel, we noticed a series of small, irregularly shaped footholds ascending up the face of the rock, much like naturally formed steps. As we climbed, we saw many shapes carved into the rock, some of them resembling important animals, such as the condor, llama, or the puma. At the very top, there was what looked like a meaningless formation of stone with two round knobs protruding from the top of a rounded base. However, for the Inca, this had an important significance, since only they knew how the sun would hit the temple during the beginning of the new solar year.

This date in the Southern Hemisphere, the winter solstice of June 21, would bring about the awakening of the puma. As the sun hit the rock formation, a shadow, distinctly that of a puma's face, would clearly project down onto the surface of the temple.

The ancient city of Cusco was built in the form of a PUMA and Sacsayhuaman represents its head. Another name for Sacsayhuaman is SACA HUMA which means PUMA HEAD. Sacsayhuaman means "Satisfied falcon", here the festilval of the INTI RAYMI, is celebrated. This festival happens during the Winter solstice around June 21. The three walls in the form of ZigZag are part of the original construction and correspond to the Teeth of the PUMA.

Sacsayhuaman is known for the huge rocks that are part of its walls, some of them weighting more than 300 tons. This rocks have been place without any mortar and have been able to survive the hundreds of years of weather and earth quakes. On the right we see an entrance, and the form of the serpent is carved on the stone. It represents the human brain and the seven chakras. Sacsayhuaman was Mystery School.

The Cavern of the Moon

The carvern of the moon is an exact representation of the wisdom of the Inkas. Here all the mystical elements are combined making this a sacred site. At the entrance we can see the head of the elephant and the steps are made of the carvings of the Condor, the Puma and the Serpent. The magnificent and extraordinary artistic skill of the Incas is really amazing. The Moon Temple is one more instance of their incredibly sophisticated constructions. Although the site is really small, it amazes one with the perfection of its chisel work.

Temple of the Condor

Our visit to Ollantaytambo includes a chamanic ceremony done at the the temple of the condor....

History of Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo is a compound Quechua word that is derived from " Ollanta" that is a personal name, and " Tambo" that is a Spanish form of " Tanpu" that refers about a city that offered lodgings, food and comfort for travelers. "Ollanta" is the name of an Inka Captain whose history was kept as an oral tradition and written as drama by Antonio Valdez, a priest from Urubamba, by the middle of the XVIII century; it was adapted for a theatrical play and opened in 1780. It is apparently since then when "Ollantaytambo" (Ollanta's tambo) began being used to name the town where events of the drama were carried out. The Ollantay Drama is considered as a classical work of Quechua literature and tells the story of a captain named Ollanta, extraneous to the Cusquenian nobility and who formed part of Inka Pachakuteq's army. He was distinguished among the others because of his bravery and great skill, but had a secret love affair with the monarch's daughter named Kusi Qoyllur.

When trying to marry her officially his request was considered illegal because the rules in force forbade marriage between persons of different social status. Disappointed the young captain went deeply into Ollantaytambo and incited its population to rebellion against the imperial army, causing a war for a whole decade. He was finally captured thanks to a trick of captain Rumiñawi who appeared as having been vexed and thrown out from Qosqo and succeeded convincing Ollanta in order to get asylum; but, during the night when everyone slept he opened the city gates allowing the Qosqo army's entrance and the capture of Ollanta who was taken to the capital.

Fortunately for him, when he arrived in Qosqo the Inka Pachakuteq was already dead, his son being the new sovereign who was told about the true story, and with wise clemency allowed the marriage of the two lovers from whose old relationship a girl had been born and whose name was Ima Sumaq. It is a story with a happy ending that nowadays is very popular in Peruvian schools that in many cases stimulate its performance.

Tambo Machay: This small sacred place, about 300 meters from the main road, consists of a beautifully wrought ceremonial stone bath and is therefore popularly called "El Baño del Inca". Here we perform ritual and cereminial baths the same way the ancient Inkas and Nustas used to perform their ceremonies of purification.

What is the Inti Raymi?

Every year on the 24th of June Cusco celebrates the festival of Inti Raymi. This festival was celebrated by the Incas as the Festival of the Sun where the God of the Sun Wiracocha is honored. The Inti Raymi symbolizes the eternal consecration of marriage between the Sun and his sons, the human beings. Inti Raymi was the most important festival of the Inca empire Tawantinsuyu which based its religion on the cult of the Sun. On the 24th of June they celebrate the winter solstice, in other words the beginning of the Sun's New Year. Scientifically the solstice begins on the 21st of June, but according to the Pacha Unachaq, a sundial used by the Incas, the sun stays some days in the same place before rising on the 24th of June. This day was proclaimed by the high priest as the New Year: Inti Raymi!

The inhabitants of Cusco traditionally involve about everybody, including tourists, to enjoy and marvel this most special day. Countless additional events are to be seen before, during and after the 24th. These are expositions, street and square activities in daytime and in the evening live concerts given by the very best of Peru's diverse musical talents, staged in the Plaza the Armas. This is the second biggest festival in Latin America, after the carnival of Rio.

Most of the concerts and expositions are for free and sponsored by the city of Cusco and Peruvian companies. For more than half a century the festival takes place at the archeological complex of Sacsayhuamán, also called the Sacred House of the Sun. More than 200 thousand people come together to witness the most beautiful spectacle of the year where more than 500 actors proudly bring the past alive. The highlight of the Inti Raymi is in the oration given by the Sapa Inca and the high priest in the original language of the Incas, Quechua. This ancient language is still spoken in wide areas in and around Cusco, mainly in the Peruvian highlands.

For some years the Inti Raymi starts in the square in front of the Qorikancha, also known as the Santa Domingo in the Avenida del Sol (see picture). The Sapa Inca honors, with an eloquently strong voice, the blessings of the Sun and this most sacred day. After this initiation the procession moves with imperial dignity to the fortress of Sacsayhuamán. At the top the Inca is carried on a golden throne (see picture next page). The abundant gold and silver worn by the men and women, respectively, represent their status as the high society and invokes deep respect for their fallen empire
