Polana has Impressed!

Imperssion 16

Polana sat at her small wooden table, still patiently working away on
Magika's dress.  She dreamed of the day her newest masterpiece would
be finished and the second care-taker would finally wear it.  A quiet
smile crossed her face as she neared the end of the sleeve, making the
needle dive in and out of the seam in almost perfect rhythm.  Two
small flits perched quietly upon her shoulder, watching in unison as the
thin sliver of metal rose and fell in the sea of red.  The silver, Dracan,
yawned loudly, finally tired and a little dizzy from watching the
sewing.  He chirruped in annoyance, demanding food.  Soon, brown
Tolt joined his brother in his food creels.

"Just a minute you two."  Polana muttered quietly, still diligently
working away at the dress.  Of course, Dracan wasn't one to wait and
knew what would happen if he did.  Polana never stopped working
unless some other important task came up.  He thought his grumbling
stomach was important enough.  Again he chirpped angrily, louder then
before.  As always, his brown brother joined him.  With both fire
draces creeling for food, Polana had no choice but to put down the
dress and find something to eat.  She sighed deeply, half-rising from
her seat while her hands still worked furiously to get in that final stitch.
Another annoyed chirp from both Dracan and Tolt got her fully up and
moving.  "Alright!  Alright!"  She chuckled lightly, heading towards
her personal room at the back of the weyr.
Both fire draces cheeped happily and launched themselves from the
girl's shoulders at the sight of two large bowls of meat sitting on the
bed side table.  Polana only chuckled happily, flopping down onto the
bed beside them.  Her quiet smile broadened slightly as she watched
her friends swallow each piece of meat without even pausing a second
                                        to chew.
"Careful you two or you'll choak yourselves."  She warned them
quietly, knowing that neither had paid any attention to her.  It didn't
matter though, at least they were happy to be her friends.  She
couldn't remember the last time she had been so happy, so free.
Coming to the warren had been the best thing in her life.  Turning
slightly, she cast a long glance up at the picture above her head.  She
could hardly believe that the girl staring back at her was her.  Only
weeks before she had been nothing more then a poor merchant's
                                        daughter.
A whispered knocking came at the door.  Though there was no door,
only a stone entrance way and a human hand probably wouldn't be able
to knock like that, Polana knew immediately who it was.  She jumped
to her feet, smiling broadly at Mystic who was framed in the entrance
                                        way.
"Mystic!"  She cried out in joy, running over swiftly and hugging her
friend.  Though she saw Mystic practically every day, each visit was
                                        as important as the last.
The woman named Mystic laughed quietly, taking Polana in her
arms.  The golden staff always at her side rested against the stone wall.
She pulled back slowly, holding Polana at arm's length.  The shy girl
she had found only a few weeks before had grown so much already.
She was even coming out to greet some of the wanderers that passed
                                        through the forest daily.
"I have something for you."  Mystic said through her constant smile,
watching as Polana's face lit up.  The last gift she had given her had
been a picture of the girl just after she had arrived and the two fire
draces who were quickly coming to an end in their meal.
She lead Polana over to the bed and took a seat on the edge,
simontaniously pulling out a rolled sheet of paper from behind her
back.  The girl watched on anxiously as both draces settled on a
shoulder each.  Drawing in a deep breath, Mystic handed the small,
brown sheet to her.  Polana raised a brow quizzically and unfurled the
                                        paper.

Polana glanced up from the paper curiously.  She had seen other
candidates with these stat sheets but, as far as she knew, she wasn't a
                                        candidate.
                                            "What's this?"
Mystic smiled weakly, anticipating Polana's next reaction.  "It is a
stat sheet.  You are now a candidate for a Sawnay Dragon."  As she
had expected, for the first few moments Polana simply stared at her in
disbelief.  Then the torrent of questions came.
"Me?"  Polana squeeked.  "How can I be a candidate?  I mean, what
kind of dragon would want to live with me?  What if the dragons don't
like me at all?  What if the other candidates don't like me?"  Caught up
in her wild imagination, the questions grew more and more interesting.
"What if they don't like me so much that they throw me out?  What if-"
Mystic cut her off before her imagination carried her too far.  Taking
the girl's shoulders in her hands, she smiled quietly, attempting to calm
                                        her.
"Polana," she began quietly, "they will not hate you. I know you are
afraid but I know you can do this.  I was also afraid when I stood for
                                        impression."
"You?  But how?  You and Myrah'Care are so close.  And...
and you've got S'trry and all the others too!"
"I was still afraid."  Mystic sighed softly, pulling Polana closer.  The
girl had become like a daughter to her.  The family she wanted so much
but couldn't have.  "Impressing a dragon is an amazing experience.  I
know you can do this because I know you are strong."  She studied
Polana with her deep hazel-green eyes, watching as the nervous, young
child struggled to reach a decision.
The two fire draces cooed softly at Polana's uncomfort.  They could
tell that their friend was confused but didn't know how to help.  Mystic
was here though, she could always make Polana happy.
"Alright."  Polana said quietly, her eyes slowly coming to meet
Mystic's as she smiled ever so softly.  "I know I can trust you."  A
bright grin spread across Mystic's face as she leaned forward to hug
Polana.  "Just one question."  The girl asked meekly.
"Anything, my dear child."  Mystic said happily, gazing down at the
shy girl who, hopefully, would soon be a dragon rider.
A look of pleading covered Polana's face as she quietly whined.
                                        "Could you come with me?"
Mystic laughed happily, hugging her again.  "Of course, child!"
