The Wests Tigers have been handed out a bit of a flogging by going down to Parramatta by 42 - 14 in their first trial game of the 2002 season.
The Eels fielded a close to full strength side while the Tigers fielded 2 teams but with very limited experience. Many youngsters played in this game to hopefully gain a contract with the Tigers.
It only took the Eels 3 mins to score their 1st try with a McFadden grubber into the ingoal with new Eels recruit Steve Witt grounding the ball to claim first points.
Balin Cupples replied in the 12min with a try of a short pass, however the Eels had too much fire power and by the first drinks break where leading 18 - 4. In the second period the Tigers were more competitive, however could not pin back the Eels and due to late John Skandalis try were behind 24 - 10 at halftime.
The second half was more of the same story. The Eels posted 4 more tries to the Tigers 1 eventually run out winners 42 - 14.
From all reports the Tigers tried gallantly against the Eels but were just outclassed. I have no doubt the Eels will be a force again this season. The scoreline in this game may look very lopsided however just remember that this is a trial and this is very beneficial to the players. New signing Matt Lockyer had a sound game in the 5/8 role, however needs to play in the final 2 trials to get adjusted to the pace of the game at this level.
Next game for the Tigers is against the Melbourne Storm on Feb 16th at Gladstone. I am sure Terry Lamb will refine the squad and field a pretty solid team for this clash.
