History and Activities
 
The National Association of the Deaf in Thailand (NADT) has been evolved from the “Alumni Society Center of Schools for the Deaf”. The Center was founded on 21 July 1969.

In the later time, the center has developed and registered to be the National Association of the Deaf in Thailand on 27 January 1984.

Our office has been moved from place to place started with Sukhumvit 51 to Din Daeng. Then we moved to Sathorn and moved again to Silom.

Now NADT has moved to the permanent office which located at 144/9 Moo Ban Thitiporn, Pattanakarn 29, Pattanakarn Rd., Suan Luang, Bangkok 10250 since year 1998.

Objectives
 

- To create unity and become the center for the Deaf
- To arouse interest and promote the legitimate rights of the Deaf
- To promote, support and assist members in occupational field
- To meet and exchange knowledge, skill and idea among the Deaf and with general public.
- To promote the better education for the Deaf
- To promote Thai Sign Languages status
- To cooperate with organisations or the disabled people associations all over the world, not involved in politics

Facts
 

- Number of the Deaf (approximately) 300,000 persons
- Number of the Deaf included hard of hearing (approximately) 1,500,000 persons

The Right of the Sign Language
 

The Ministry of Education certified Thai Sign Language to be the National Language of Thai Deaf on 17 August 1999.
The Ministry of Education announced Thai Sign Language to be the main subject in schools for the Deaf on 7 June 2000.

The Right for Thai Deaf
 

The Right of Thai citizen ; states in Thai Constitution in the year 1997.
- Has Right in political voting
- Able to apply for parliament members candidates

NADT’s activities
 

- Demonstration for Driving License by submitted the letter to the Minister of Transport and Communications.

- Participated with the Council of Disabled People of Thailand in campaigning to amend the Laws which discriminated disabled people’s occupations on 28 November 2001 at the parliament.

- Requested the television program to televise with the Thai Sign Language for the Deaf, so they could access to information.
o Television program “Life and Health” Channel 9 every Sunday Time : 20.30 – 21.30 hr. started from February 2000
o The evening news on Channel 11 Broadcast daily from 18.30 – 19.30 hr

- Revise and publicize Thai Sign Language book
o Thai Sign Language Dictionary Book 1 and Thai Sign Language Dictionary Book ; Revised and Expanded Edition

- Teaching Thai Sign Language

- Organized the Sign Language seminar to compile and to publish Thai Sign Language books

- Thai Sign Language Video

- Counseling Services

- Job Placement Services

- Sign Language Interpreting Services

- Training for Driving

- Computer Training

- Law Training for Deaf Women
