Eri cocoons are open-mouthed and not composed of continuous filaments, they are not reelable. They form a good raw material for spinning. The treatment of cocoons and process of spinning are described:

1. CLEANING OF COCOONS: clean and empty the Eri cocoons free from dry chrysalis skin and last larval skin are used. Such clean cocoons can also be cleaned by corytor cocoon reverser, a simple machine by which the cocoons are turned inside out and all waste materials are eliminated.

2. STIFLING: Cocoons are stifled to preserve them for longer period without decolouration. Stifling is usually done by exposing the cocoons to sun for one or two days.

3. DEGUMMING: Cocoons are first boiled in a solution of soda of potash. Planting leaves or leaf ashes, wood ashes, ashes from wheat stalk, paddy straw, black pulse plants and pieces of green papaya can also be used for dissolving certain portion of the adhering gum round the filament. While boiling, if the filament comes out easily to the pull, it may assumed that the boiling is sufficient, over boiling weaken the filament and result in the layer of the filament coming off in lump.

4. SPINNING: The cocoons, thus prepared can be spun in wet condition with "TAKLI" and in semi dry condition with hand charka (spinning wheel). During the course of spinning, though it become dry, it should always be kept wet by sprinkling water. MOTORIZED SPINNING MACHINE:

Recently, the research and development of central Silk Board has develop a Motorized Spinning Machine, this machine is operated by an electrical motor and the production per day is largely higher compare to that of traditional method. Under the scheme of on going Eri Silk Development Project in the State the beneficiaries will make available of the machine in the project areas.
