Jesus answered, "I told you I AM; so if you seek me, let these go their way." John 18.4-8

What did his reply to them mean? I suggest that he was saying, "Yes, I am the Jesus you seek; whom you have found, however, is the covenant God of Israel in the flesh."

Consider the provisions of the Covenant (Deuteronomy 28)

WOW! These are the provisions of the Covenant in which Jesus operated during his earthly ministry. (It was valid and operative, for all who believed, from the time God enacted it until the time the New Covenant was enacted and ratified by the blood of the Lamb.) These covenant promises are precisely what Jesus was calling to remembrance in the minds of his audience every time he used the name, "I AM."

The "Jews" of Jesus' time certainly understood the full import of his use of, and personal association with, the covenant name, "I AM"; for on more than one occasion they sought to kill or incarcerate him for this very thing!

Peter got a handle on it, and walked on water! I suggest the following paraphrase:
Jesus: "Do not be afraid. I AM is here with you. Take courage from me."
Peter: "If you are I AM, nothing is impossible for you, so command me to walk to you on the water."
Jesus: "Let it be as you believe. Come here!"

Peter was neither the first nor the last of God's children to walk on the promises of God only to experience a faith failure when focus is diverted from the truth to a lie. It began in the garden of Eden and will continue until Jesus comes back for us. God's "first covenant" partners experienced this phenomenon.

While in Egypt, the Lord delivered his people via awesome signs and wonders, plagues and devastation on the enemies of Israel. In these, he plainly and powerfully showed his willingness and ability to deliver his own.

Israel left the bondage in Egypt having plundered their captors of great wealth and possessions. They began their journey with an abundance of money, livestock, clothing, family, and servants, heading for lands already full of houses and crops prepared, ready and waiting for them.

They did not believe God, so were instead led to wander in a wilderness for 40 years.

During the wilderness travel, God led them with his own presence. Deuteronomy 2:7 states, "For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the works of your hand: he knows your walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the Lord your God is with you; you have lacked nothing."

The next generation possessed the land and all the blessings promised. After they became "fat" with the blessing, they forsook and forgot the Blesser, following after and serving other gods.

The curse of Deuteronomy 28 ensued.

God promised a deliverer, and said of him in the 11th chapter of Isaiah, "The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. He will delight in the fear of the Lord, and he will not judge by what his eyes see, nor make a decision by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he will judge the poor, and decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; he will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. Also righteousness will be the belt about his loins, and faithfulness the belt about his waist."

Jesus came as the "repairer of the breach" and "restorer of paths to dwell in."

Jesus said, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he anointed me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are downtrodden, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord."

When Jesus said, "I AM," he was saying, "REMEMBER! You have a God whose name is 'I AM'; he has made covenant with you; call to mind his revealed names and what they mean; call to mind the provisions of his covenant."

We, the Church, the Body of Christ, today's Gospel believers have been given a BETTER covenant, enacted on BETTER promises. (cf. Hebrews 8:6) The provisions of the original covenant were not annuled by Jesus, rather added to! The first covenant provided everything for life, but not everything for godliness. The good news that Jesus preached, i.e. "the kingdom of God is at hand," added to the first covenant the fulfillment of God's promise to "write his laws upon their hearts and minds" (Jeremiah 31:33). This promise came to fruition on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came to live and dwell in mankind permanenlty. GLORY TO GOD FOREVER!! Now we have everything pertaining to life and godliness, given by God to his people (2 Peter 1:3). HALLELUJAH!!

Child of God, hear what the Spirit is saying to you today.
