Look to Abraham

Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness, who seek the Lord: Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug. Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who gave birth to you in pain; when he was one I called him, then I blessed him and multiplied him.
Isaiah 51:1-2

Friend of God

The Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham what I am going to do? Genesis 18:17

Did not you, O our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend? 2 Chronicles 20:7

Obedient to God

So Abram departed, as the Lord had directed him Genesis 12:4

Abraham took Ishmael his son and all who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among those of Abraham’s house, and circumcised them the very same day, as God had said to him. Genesis 17:23

God said, Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah; and offer him there as a burnt offering upon one of the mountains of which I will tell you. So Abraham rose early in the morning, [and did as the Lord instructed]. Genesis 22:1

Abraham listened attentively to my voice and kept my charge (prohibition or requirement of certain actions), my commandments, my statutes (principles governing the affairs of man) and my laws. Genesis 26:5

Tither

Abram gave [Melchizedek, priest of God Most High] a tenth of all he had taken. Genesis 14:20

Generous

So Abram said to Lot, Let there be no strife, I beg of you, between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are relatives. Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself, I beg of you, from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left. Genesis 13:8-9

He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men stood at a little distance from him. He ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the ground and said, My lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant, I beg of you. Let a little water be brought, and you may wash your feet and recline and rest yourselves under the tree. And I will bring a morsel of bread to refresh and sustain your hearts before you go on further. Genesis 18:2-5

Courageous

When Abram heard that his nephew had been captured, he armed and led forth the 318 trained servants born in his own house and pursued the enemy Genesis 14:14

Relied on the Lord to Prosper Him

Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lifted up my hand and sworn to the Lord, God Most High, the possessor and maker of heaven and earth, that I would not take a thread or a shoelace or anything that is yours, lest you should say, I have made Abram rich. (He depended totally upon God for his prosperity) Genesis 14:22

Compassionate

Abram pleaded with the Lord not to destroy the righteous people with the wicked in Sodom. Genesis 18:23-32

Man of Prayer and Worship

Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, I will give this land to your posterity. So Abram built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him. Genesis 12:7

From there he pulled up his tent pegs and departed to the mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord. Genesis 12:8

Abram returned to Bethel, where he had built an altar before, and there Abram called on the name of the Lord. Genesis 13:4

Then Abram moved his tent and came and dwelt among the oaks of Mamre, which are at Hebron, and built there an altar to the Lord. Genesis 13:18

Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and called there on the name of the Lord. Genesis 21:33

When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there Genesis 22:9

Man of Faith

Abram believed in, trusted in, relied on, remained steadfast to the Lord (concerning the Lord’s promise to multiply him); and the Lord counted it to him as righteousness (right standing with God). Genesis 15:6

What does the Scripture say? Abraham believed in, trusted in God, and it was credited to his account as righteousness, right living and right standing with God. Romans 4:3

By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise; for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith even Sarah herself received ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered him faithful who had promised; therefore, also, there was born of one man, and him as good as dead at that, as many descendants as the stars of heaven in number, and innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore. Hebrews 11:8-12

By faith Abraham, when he was put to the test, while the testing of his faith was still in progress, had already brought Isaac for an offering; he who had gladly received and welcomed God’s promises was ready to sacrifice his only son, of whom it was said, Through Isaac shall your descendants be reckoned. For he reasoned that God was able to raise him up even from among the dead. Indeed in the sense that Isaac was figuratively dead [potentially sacrificed], he did [actually] receive him back from the dead. Hebrews 11:17-19

Was not our forefather Abraham shown to be justified (made acceptable to God) by his works when he brought to the altar as an offering his own son Isaac? You see that his faith was cooperating with his works, and his faith was completed and reached its supreme expression when he implemented it by good works. And so the Scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed in, adhered to, trusted in, and relied on God, and this was accounted to him as righteousness (as conformity to God’s will in thought and deed), and he was called God’s friend. James 2:21

Progenitor of True Believers

Thus Abraham believed in and adhered to and trusted in and relied on God, and it was reckoned and placed to his account and credited as righteousness, as conformity to the divine will in purpose, thought, and action. Know and understand that it is really the people who live by faith who are the true sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify, declare righteous, put in right standing with himself, the Gentiles in consequence of faith, proclaimed the Gospel [foretelling the glad tidings of a Savior long beforehand] to Abraham in the promise, saying, In you shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. So then, those who are people of faith are blessed and made happy and favored by God [as partners in fellowship] with the believing and trusting Abraham. Galatians 3:6-9

And if you belong to Christ [are in him who is Abraham’s Seed], then you are Abraham’s offspring and [spiritual] heirs according to promise. Galatians 3:29
