Digital Communication An Introduction Digital Communications began operations in 1979 in an area where no Pakistani company existed. It was conceived as a high technology R & D Company to work, obviously in digital communications. The first assignment was the local assembly, installation and maintenance of microprocessor based digital communication system and peripheral equipment, connected to leased lines. Since then the company has moved on in its development activities. It has developed a state of the art microcomputer controlled EPABX with a digital switch (pulse code modulated), and negotiated an agreement with the Telephone Industries of Pakistan (TIP) and the Pakistan Telephone and Telegraph (T & T), whereby TIP will manufacture this EPABX at Haripur. Digital Communications has also developed a Low Speed Telex switch, which is interfaced to a computer (polled) and to the Public Telex. This gives access to stations/(branches), which cannot be linked to the network by dedicated lines, and also provides/enables to transmit batch mode data to remote sites where on-line communication channels are not readily available. Current design and development activities include computerized detailed billing equipment for large telephone exchanges and the development of small to medium size Telex Exchanges. It has already begun to market its microprocessor based industrial voice communication systems and high-speed data switching equipment. A system design/study was given to Pakistan International Airlines for the supply and maintenance of computer-based message Switching Systems to be located in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi. The marketing of such products based on leading edge technologies, in an environment such as in Pakistan provides, requires a commitment to the adequate provision of maintenance capability, and this Digicom has taken pains to ensure. It has marketed its maintenance service as a distinct product, and is now serving Citibank N.A. in the maintenance of their microcomputer based communication equipments. Digital Communications has undertaken to maintain an on-line computer system for the American Express Banking Corporation. Digital Communications is pleased to offer systems design, development and maintenance services to other organizations for computer systems and advanced communication systems. It can support this offer with a verifiable track record and the availability of adequate maintenance and development facilities.
