Hazrat Idris (or Prophet Enoch)
(Peace be upon him)
Allah's Praises of Hazrat Idrees (or Prophet Enoch)
Allah has praised Hazrat Idrees (AS) (or Prophet Enoch), describing him as
being a prophet and truthful: And mention in the Book (the Qur'an) Idris
(Enoch).
Verily! He was a man of truth, (and) a prophet. And We raised him to a
high station. Surah 19: 56-57
"And (also) mention Idrees in this Book (The Quran). Indeed he was a most truthful Prophet. And We had elevated him to a high place."
Birth and Teachings
Hazrat Idrees (or Prophet Enoch) was born 308 years before the death of Prophet Adam (AS), and was from the sixth generation of Hazrat Adam's offspring. He was raised in Babylon
following the teachings and religion of Prophet Adam (AS) and his son Sheeth. Hazrat Idrees (or Prophet Enoch) was the fifth generation of the Prophet Adam. His father was Ya Rid Bin Mahla-Yeel. Between Hazrat Idrees (or Prophet Enoch) and Hazrat Nooh for Prophet Nuh (the Nabi who was going to come after him), there was a period of one thousand years. He was among the ancestors of Hazrat Nooh (AS). Allah had revealed to Hazrat Idrees (AS)(or Prophet Enoch) thirty suhuf (scrolls).
He called the people back to his forefathers' religion, but only a few listened to him, while the majority
turned away.
Hazrat Idrees (or Prophet Enoch) and his followers left
Babylon for Egypt. There he carried on his mission, calling people to what is
just and fair, teaching them certain prayers and instructing them to fast on
certain days and to give a portion of their wealth to the poor.
The Great Inventor
He was the first of the Children of Adam
to be given prophethood after Hazrat Adam (AS) and Sheeth (AS). It is reported that he was
the first to invent the basic form of writing. He was also the first to manufacture weapons, and with the same weapons he waged jihad against the children of Qaabeel. After the death of Qaabeel, the generations that came after him had rejected Allah and His Prophets. So Hazrat Idris waged war against them, for they had now become the enemies of Allah. Hazrat Idris (AS) was granted by Allah knowledge of astronomy and arithmetic, and he taught this to people. He also invented the art of sewing clothes, at a time when people used the skins of animals to cover their bodies. Hazrat Idrees taught people how to sew clothing. Another practice introduced by him into the world was the method of measuring and weighing. All this knowledge came to him through Wahi (revelation) from Allah.
The Wise saying of Hazrat Idrees (AS) or Prophet Enoch
Some of his wise sayings are:
"Happy is he who looks at his own deeds and appoints them as pleaders to
his Lord."
"None can show better gratitude for
Allah's favors than he who shares them with others."
"Do not envy people for what they
have, as they will only enjoy it for a short while."
"He who indulges in excess will not
benefit from it."
"The real joy of life is to have
wisdom."
Demise
We again have different views among the Ulema or the scholars as to how he died. A very strong narration says that when the time came for Hazrat Idrees (AS) to die, he was lifted up to the fourth heaven and that was where the Angel of Death extracted his rooh or spirit. Where as some believe he is among the four alive prophets, i.e. Hazrat Idrees, Hazrat Illyas, Hazrat Khidr and Hazrat Essa. The next Prophet after Hazrat Idrees (AS) was Hazrat Nooh (AS).
