Synopsis:

In the dense jungles of Peru the Polish entrepreneur Stan Tyminski promises a dying general that he will be a Jefe, chief, and take care of the man's beautiful young daughter Gabriela. Years later after he builds a successful hi-tech business in Canada, Stan's political aspirations get the best of him. As the Soviet bloc disintegrates the nation Stan emigrated from, Poland, announces the first free elections after the fall of communism. Stan gets an idea that a briefcase full of alleged proof of fraud by the competition in his home country can propel him to the top of the political popularity charts. The ruse works! He returns to the nation he emigrated from to participate in the presidential election. He promises the workers that he will expose the corruption and graft associated with the privatization of their plants. He waves the briefcase in front of crowds at political rallies. He quickly gains notoriety and manages to win the primary election. He becomes the only runner up in the final election. His contender is the world famous Solidarity candidate Lech Walesa. However Stan's opponents launch a nasty smear campaign against him and he stops short of grasping the winner's cup. After the election he returns to Toronto. There he finds a humiliated and neglected Gabriela, disillusioned with her husband's public struggles. She wants a divorce, and fights for ownership and control of his company. He ends his days in a bitter and defeated state. He wishes that he had never attempted to defy the odds to become the first president of the free republic of Poland after communist rule.
