The Sistine Chapel itself was painted by other Renaissance artists like Botticelli, Signorelli, Pinturicchio and Rosselli before Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to the paint the barrel-vaulted ceiling. 20 years after he completed the ceiling, he was commissioned to paint "The Last Judgment" on the wall behind the simple altar.
