Being a bit frivilous, Miaka doesn't take her position as Miko very seriously at first, thinking that it will be easy to find her 7 Seishi. While her goofy and cheerful nature stays with her, Miaka also becomes much more serious and responsible as time goes by. She is a very trusting and forgiving person, and can be very naive which gets her in trouble from time to time. She is also very self-sacrificing, willing to give her life so others do not suffer. Miaka believes that if you have enough strength and love inside of you, then you can endure anything. All of these qualities charm the people that surround her, and make her an ideal Miko. Above all else, Miaka strives to succeed for the 2 people that she loves most: her best friend, Yui, and her only love, Tamahome. Miaka wants nothing more than to unite with Yui and live like they did before. Even when Yui begins to fall under Nakago's evil influence, Miaka still wants to make things right with her. Tamahome has a profound influence on Miaka because he is her first love. She depends on Tamahome, but feels bad that he sometimes gets hurt because of her. While she depends on Tamahome to protect her, she can hold her own in some situations.
Little did he know how much his life would change after saving Miaka and Yui frm trafficers that day. Disappointed that they have no money to give him after doing so, he abandons them saying that he doesn't like poor people. Later, while in the capital city of Konan, Tamahome meets Miaka again, and agrees to help her find her way around. Despite the trouble that Miaka gets herself and Tamahome into, he would still protect her from harm without a second thought. It is when they are at the palace that Tamahome learns he is a Suzaku Seishi, and Miaka's primary protector. Tamahome takes his position as a Seishi very seriously, yet still likes to act goofy and joke around with the Miaka and the fellow Seishi when the time is right. He is loyal, responsible, strong-willed, and has a soft heart. He is also very smart, and knows the consequences of the situations he gets himself into. With his dashing good looks and lively sense of humor, Tamahome is quite the charmer. However, finding love is the last thing on his mind, because he has been earning money most of his life for his poor, ailing father and 4 younger siblings. Though Tamahome regards Miaka as a little sister-type, his romantic attraction to her is quite obvious. He denies, at first, that he has any kind of feelings of "love" for Miaka, but eventually accepts the fact that he is quite in-love with her. Tamahome dedicates his life to Miaka, and will fight his hardest and would die for her.
While going through the capital city of Konan with his entarage of guards, he is approached by Miaka in a rather silly manner, and she asks him for a jewel off his crown. Outraged, his guards immediately attack Miaka and Tamahome, and a red light emits from Miaka's body. Curious about who Miaka really is, Hotohori orders them to be captured and taken to the palace. When Miaka escapes from her cell, Hotohori meets her in disguise in order to find out where she came from. When Miaka tells him that she's from another world, he is sure she is the girl he's been waiting for and reveals his true identity. Later, he asks Miaka to become the Suzaku no Miko and live in the palace, and reveals that he and Tamahome are both Suzaku Seishi. Being the Emporer, Hotohori has great leadership skills. He cares for the people of Konan and wants Miaka to wish for eternal peace and protection for his people. Between being a competent Emporer and Seishi, Hotohori does not think of his own personal needs much of the time. One thing he does think about a lot is Miaka, and immediate falls in-love with her. Unlike Tamahome, Hotohori is not afraid of his feelings and does not hesitate to let Miaka know how he feels. Though he may appear a bit reserved and cold at times, but his warm heart and passion for Miaka's love shines through much of the time. Hotohori is not as playful as the other Seishi, but his very feminine looks and habit for being vain make for some very humorous reactions from others.
When Nuriko hears about Miaka becoming the Suzaku no Miko, "she" is not too happy that Hotohori is giving her lots of attention. After saving Miaka and Tamahome from underneath collasped pillar, "she" is revealed to be the 3rd Suzaku Seishi. In order to make Miaka jealous, Nuriko pretends to go after Tamahome and fawn all over him. "She" gives Miaka nothing but attitude and refuses to protect her has a Seishi. However, Miaka becomes wise to what Nuriko is really upset about, and confronts "her" that she knows she actually loves Hotohori, not Tamahome. Nuriko is charmed by Miaka's kindness after he had treated her so badly, and vows to protect her from then on. Despite the tragedy of his past, Nuriko is a very happy and playful person. He doesn't like to see others upset or emotionally unsettled. Nuriko even schemes to get Tamahome and Miaka to admit their obvious feelings of love because the tension drives him so crazy at times. Nuriko is a great giver of advice, and acts as sort of an older brother-type to the Seishi (Tamahome in particular). He is ready and willing to accept any situations presented to him, even the fact that he knows Hotohori could never love him back. Nuriko is an honest and trustworthy person, taking pride in his skills and accomplishments.
Chichiri first appears after he saves Miaka from being hit by an assassins' deadly arrow attack. He appears in a "super-deformed" mode (a small and cute chubby body) and disappears into his kasa, much to Miaka's curiosity. She carries the kasa around with her, only to be saved by Chichiri a second time from another assassin. Appearing before Miaka (in his actual size this time ^_^), he tells Miaka that others will be hurt because of her and to be very careful. Later, Chichiri comes to the rescue again, when assassins follow Miaka and the others to Tamahome's family's home. The kanji on his knee is revealed after during the assault, and Chichiri is revealed as the fourth Suzaku Seishi. Chichiri is the Suzaku Seishi's voice of reason. He is extremely knowledgable about his surroundings, and always offers guidance and counsel to those who need it, without judgement. While he enjoys being in the company of his fellow Seishi, Chichiri also likes to take time to be alone and at one with nature. Even in the most dire of situations, Chichiri is calm and collective, never letting his emotions override his actions. It is clear that Chichiri is there is provide help to Miaka and the Seishi without any kind of selfish reason. Being one of the most powerful Seishi, he is a great ally to have.
Tasuki, known as Genrou among the bandits, was away on a journey when he is returns in the midst of a rather eventful situation. Eiken, a fellow bandit, has stolen the sacred Tessen and made himself the new bandit leader. The bandits have also captured Miaka the others when they were in the Mt. Leikaku area, and Eiken makes Miaka his own special "prize". Thinking that Miaka is his wife, Genrou kidnaps her as payback and challenges Eiken to get position of leader back. At a secret hideout, Genrou, along with his best friend Koji, explain to Miaka about the Tessen and how he needs to get it back. Miaka decides to help Genrou re-claim his position as leader, and in return he will help her find Tasuki, the Seishi that is among the bandits. After Eiken is "de-throned" with Miaka's help, Genrou reveals that Tasuki is actually dead, as he was the former leader of the bandits. Later, Genrou reveals that he is actually Tasuki, but he decieved them because he could not just leave his position as the bandit leader. With Koji taking over for his, Tasuki happily assumes his position as the sixth Suzaku Seishi. Tasuki has a great amount of determination and courage inside of him. He would not hesitate to fight for the ones he cares about. His loyality to Miaka and fellow Seishi is astounding. Tasuki puts on a "tough guy" image, but takes great pain in seeing others that he cares about get hurt. He is also a bit naive and doesn't think too much before he says or does things. His relationship with Tamahome is very amusing, because they like to act like brawling brothers most of the time. This makes for plenty of comic relief ^_^.
Upon learning that Tasuki is dead, Miaka and the others venture to the village of Choukou in hopes of finding the person who is rumored to be able to bring back people from the dead. Literally, Miaka bumps into a pretty young woman named Shoka, who also happens to possess the fabled power that they are searching for. Unluckily enough, Choukou is being plauged by a painful disease called the Shikkonki, and of course Miaka manages to catch it. The only doctor in the village that can possibly help is Myojuan, a hermit-like man who lives in the outskirts of the village. He rudely rufuses to help Miaka, saying that he stopped practicing medicine awhile ago. Shoka says the only way to help Miaka is to kill her, and then she can use her powers to bring Miaka back to life and in good health. Not wanting to resort to such drastic measures, the Seishi beg Myojuan once more to help Miaka, and mention Shoka's name. Myojuan is startled by this, saying that Shoka died a year ago! Agreeing to help, Myojuan exorcises the demon that has taken over Shoka's body and spread the horrible Shikkonki disease. He then heals Miaka and is revealed to be the Suzaku Seishi. Being and doctor and healer, Mitsukake has a great love for life. He takes pride in his ability to help people heal from injuries and disease. Mitsukake always appears to be very calm and keeps to himself much of the time. He is always around to help his fellow Seishi, but usually hangs out in the background until he is needed. Because of this, he may appear to be a bit emotionless, however this could not be further from the truth. He's calm nature allows him to think clearly and make sense of situations without his emotions getting out of control. He is very easy to listen to and understand, making his words very powerful and influencial.
While studying to be a government official, Chiriko noticed that the starry night sky showed trouble was heading for Miaka and her Seishi. He races to Konan palace in a carriage, and arrives just in time to save Miaka and the others from Amiboshi, a Seiryuu Seishi sent from Kutou as a spy. Upon revealing the kanji on his foot, Chiriko is discovered to be the final Seishi. Chiriko's abilities excel behind the scenes, persay. While he doesn't do any kind of physical fighting, or possess any magical powers, Chiriko is very good at planning stratedgies. His sharp intellect enables him to figure out ways for the Seishi to travel and communicate with each other without being noticed by enemies. Like Mitsukake, Chiriko is quietly around to lend his support and is more than willing to help when asked. Though he prides himself in his intellectual abilities, Chiriko feels that he is useless most of the time. Being the youngest Seishi, others feel the need to the protect him rather than let him fight in any way. Despite that, Chiriko's keen mind and wisdom perfectly rounds out the powers of the rest of the Suzaku Seishi.
