Two years ago, on the first day of school at St. Tounan High School, Aihara Kotoko accidentally kissed Irie Naoki on the lips and has been in love with him ever since. At the last year of school, she finally plucks up the courage to hand him a love letter. But Naoki rejects it without even looking at it, saying that he dislikes 'people with poor brains'. Her friends make her feel worse by commenting that Naoki and his classmate Reiko are the golden couple in school.

  Kotoko truds home with heavy footsteps where a bigger shock awaits her. Her home is burnt down in ferocious flames. Machiko, her father's high school friend, then offers to let them stay in her house for the time being. Kotoko is stunned when she finds out that Machiko is actually Naoki's mother. Though Kotoko offers to leave immediately, Naoki lets her stay on, knowing what had happened to her house. Yuki, Naoki's younger brother, dislikes Kotoko as she has taken up his bedroom.

When alone in her bedroom, Kotoko begins to feel excited about living under the same roof as Naoki. The latter, however, tells Kotoko plainly that he dislikes her. He even lays some ground rules including not to tell others that they are currently staying in the same house together, not to talk to him in school and to keep a 2-metre distance from him. Though Kotoko agrees to it all, Naoki angers her by not coming to her rescue when she was harassed by some gangsters. In a spite of moment, she offers Naoki a challenge in terms of results and publicly declares that she will be Top 100 in the coming mid-term examinations.

  The next day at breakfast, Machiko shows Kotoko some pictures of Naoki dressed in girls' clothing when he was young. The girl then 'schemes' to get Naoki to help her in her studies by threatening to circulate the photo in the school. He then agrees reluctantly to her request.

  From then on, Kotoko starts to work extremely hard, always studying wherever she goes. Naoki is amused when she even knocks into a lamp post while studying a bunch of notes in her hands. That night, she finally gets one math question correct and hugs Naoki in a moment of excitement. The latter pushes her away immediately. When they fall asleep together, Machiko grabs the chance to take some photos of them.

  On the day of the examination, Machiko gives Kotoko an amulet containing the pictures she took. Kotoko is unaware of it. When she walks past Naoki in the school, he stops briefly and gives her his enouragement. This makes Kotoko extremely happy. The scene is also seen by Reiko in a corner. When the results come out, both Naoki and Kotoko are very much disappointed when her name does not appear on the board. Naoki however, gets full marks again. A dismayed Kotoko drops the amulet unknowingly. Later they feel relieved when they realise that Kotoko had actually got the same score as the 100th person but due to that fact that she's from F class, the principal refuses to put her name up.

  Recognising Kotoko's preseverence,  Naoki's view of her changes for the better. Meanwhile the photos get posted up on the school's tabloid board and news of Naoki and Kotoko staying together leaked out, causing much commotion in the school.

  The school's annual cross-country relay is approaching and Kotoko makes a bet with Naoki: If her class loses, she will pack up and leave the Irie residence. Before the match however, she hurt herself while trying to save Yuki from being knocked down by a bicycle. She keeps quiet about her injury.

  On the day itself, Kotoko is slowed down immersely by the throbbing pain in her ankle. She reminds Naoki of their bet and the latter ends up coming in first. On the way back, Kotoko faints due to exhaustion. Naoki hurt himself in a bid to save her. He even carries her back to his house and this makes Kotoko extremely happy and touched. This is witnessed by the jealous Reiko. That night Naoki does not force Kotoko to leave. She then stays on.

  A note is pinned up on the board, claiming that Kotoko has stolen money from Naoki's family. Naoki clarifies the matter and Kotoko is touched. She tries to show her gratitude by making dinner for him, but makes a mess of herself and the kitchen. She discovers that Naoki is actually a great cook.

  The students have now received their university application forms and both Naoki and Kotoko are unsure of where to go next. Naoki refuses to let Kotoko pry into his affairs and an indignant her shouts loudly in public that Naoki is the person she likes most. She is called 'baka' again by him. Unable to bear his mother's insensibility towards his father, Naoki explodes one day at the dinner table and left home when confronted by Ki. Kotoko chases after him and says that she dislikes the way he is behaving now. Unexpectedly, Naoki kisses her on the lips, and challenges her to show her dislike for him if she can really do so.

  Everyone is surprised when Naoki opts to study economics instead of sciences. The frustration in him mounts up day by day. He neglects Yuki, who is suffering from depression and insults Kotoko when she tries to do something for Yuki. Yuki however, is touched by the efforts Kotoko put in for him and starts to accept her more.

   When Naoki shows disrespect for his elders,  Kotoko slaps him in a fit of anger. She chases after him when he left the house and gives him a soft kiss before moving out of his place. While helping Yuki to tidy up the bedroom, Naoki feels a tinge of sadness upon recollecting the happy memories he had with Kotoko.

  On a date to the zoo set up by Yuki, Kotoko finds out that Naoki is unable to find a dream to motivate him. She then makes a collection of all kinds of dreams and ambitions that her schoolmates have and collates it into a book to give to Naoki. He is touched by her efforts. Thereafter, he agrees to let Kotoko stay with them again. Yuki remarks that since their lives have been going on too smoothly before, Kotoko can be seen as a new challenge and a 'test' to them.

  A few days before Christmas, Reiko follows Naoki home after school and Kotoko is bewildered when she overhears them talking about a 'secret'. It turns out that Naoki had stolen a CD a few years ago on Christmas day. Reiko took the rap for him. Knowing that Naoki has suffered a guilt-ridden conscience since then, Kotoko encourages him to apologise to the CD shop owner. They are stopped by Reiko before he can do so. Kotoko is left alone in the house when Naoki attends Reiko's Christmas party.

  The probability of Naoki studying in Todai University is very high but Kotoko knows that she will never be able to get into it. Refusing to give up, she decides to find a job near Todai in order to see Naoki everyday. When Kinnosuke gives her an amulet, she gets inspired and happily buys all sorts of amulets to bless Naoki, even including 'smooth delivery'. Naoki, however, is unappreciative of her concern.

 Naoki is due to report for entrance exams for Todai University. Kotoko wants to let him have a quiet sleep but ironically ends up making the most noise herself. Naoki feels traumatized by her. Kotoko walks with Naoki to Todai but suffers from immerse stomach pain along the way. When she faints, Naoki forsakes his exams to carry her to the hospital. She is guilt-ridden but Naoki later tells her that it is not her fault. The real reason is at that time, he was still unsure of what he really wanted. Kotoko erupts with happiness when Naoki reveals that he has finally found his ambition - to become a doctor.

  To support Naoki in his dream, Kotoko aims to become a nurse. However the only nursing school which is willing to accept her is in Akito. That would signify her separation from Naoki. Despite her sadness, Kotoko persists on, knowing that her path would end up meeting Naoki's one day - both of them are still going in the same direction. She finally gets admitted to the school and Naoki spurs her on to work harder. Reiko purposely gloats about that fact that she and Naoki will be studying in the same course, same university again.

  On the day of departure, Kotoko cries while saying goodbye to Naoki. She even wants to tape down him calling her 'baka'. Naoki reluctantly follows his mother's wish of carrying her luggage for her to the train station. Kotoko hopes that Naoki would smile at her before she boards the train, saying that though she has seen all kinds of expressions from him, she never once seen him truly smile before. Naoki however, walks away without doing so. Kotoko breaks down in tears.

  Two years later.

  Naoki, together with Reiko, are now medical students at Tounan University. One day, he feels an 'air of weirdness' around him but is unable to put his finger to it. It turns out that Kotoko is back for her internship as a nurse and is spying on his movements. She wails on seeing that Naoki has smiled brilliantly at Reiko. Kotoko initially plans for a 'romantic reunion' with Naoki but as fate would have it, she ends up knocking into him at a passageway and splashing urine samples all over him. Naoki is caught in an awkward situation.

  Back at the Irie residence, Kotoko realises that the arrangement of the kitchen has changed and Reiko seems to know everything. She keeps referring to Kotoko as a 'guest'.  When Kotoko accidentally breaks some plates, the two girls fight over who to pick them up. When both of them cut their fingers, Naoki tends to Reiko with great care and ignores Kotoko, though the latter has an  even bigger cut. This hurts her heart deeply.

  During Kotoko's return, everyone notices that she has mature a lot and does not make all the troubles she did last time. On the day she is due to return to Akito, Machiko urges Naoki to chase after her. Much to her exasperation, he chooses to return to his bedroom instead.

  Back in his bedroom, Kotoko's cheerful voice keeps ringing in Naoki's ears no matter how hard he tries to shut that out. After a moment of hesitation, he seems to realise something and rushes to the train station immediately. He panics when the train has left the station and desperately keeps on shouting Kotoko's name. Just when he thinks he has lost her, Kotoko appears on the other side of the railway track. A relieved Naoki rushes to her side and hugs her close to him. Kotoko is moved to tears when Naoki tells her not to leave again, and to stay by his side. They then kiss each other passionately.

  This scene is witnessed by Machiko and Yuki. As they watch the couple tease each other playfully, Machiko exclaims happily that all along, she is right by saying Naoki and Kotoko are meant to be together. ^_^

   And they live happily ever after... (should be the case...)
