Faithful to his wife, yet unable to stay away from Annie for long, Mikkaill finds himself seeking her out for conversation, companionship and military advice. Annie for her part connects with the enigmatic Adil Mennth. Mennth, a Ranger trusted by few yet valued by the Legion Commander, is drawn to Annie for reasons perhaps even he can not explain. Under stress from the currents of tension around her in the city, Annie asks the Ranger Commander, Ricoh Gideonn for a new assignment. Ric listens to her plea and has mercy on an old friend. She is sent out into the field to train Tasha Krell.
During this time, when Mik has been attentive to his own difficulties, he is unaware that his brother's wife cheats on her wheelchair bound husband. Ricoh is crushed by the betrayal. He shoots her lover in their bed and his cheating wife leaves him.
Nate Carterr, the Legion Ranger Field Commander rejects his commision and resigns from the Legion in protest over the Legion's failure to adhere strictly to it's own tenets and the hanging death of a Nuke prisoner of War, Captain Jacob Sommersbyy. Mik knows Carterr won't be out of trouble for long. Strange events follow that severely injure Riane Gideonn, her mother Macy Brrace and Riane's young lover, Lucas Ralekk. Sommersbyy's ghost is believed to be the culprit. In an unprecedented use of magic, the Fellowship exorcises the ghost... and discovers the Mage behind the torment of the spirit and it's humunn targets is a Nuclear Messiah Reverend holed up somewhere in Perdoxx. Magic sent so far, and with such force must have technology to back it up! Yet, the Fellowship of Magic suffers many losses as the Cult gains power again in the City of New Rydynn and cannot pursue the matter. A dangerous woman called "The Saint" takes over the Cult's headquarters of activity, the Club Abyss and begins to make alliances in the city.
The Union draws tighter unto itself as it maintains the hospital and a clinic across town from Memorial. Still the Union of Medics will make no alliances and protects it's own defiantly. Dr. Ainsleighh finds her home there, where former PTB Dr. Adriann Bell also serves the Union. If Ainsleighh stays in the hospital, she is safe from Legion retribution, she believes. Dr. Kristoferr Holidayy, sharing quarters with Teagen, considers the hospital almost too closed down. He and Teagen periodically discuss leaving the Union to join the Legion. Teagen would be returning to her first field of service.
Ricoh's despondency convinces Mik that his brother needs time away from the dreary city. He has dared to try to stand, and it seems Ric's injuries might be healing. So with word from the north that unidentified troops are on the move, Mik fears that the Church's Nuclear Messiah troops have returned to his continent. He sends Ricoh, Riane and Lucas South to Paradise Island to rush the building of an Air Force.
Word from the North confirms the arrival of Nukes in Kermaddikk just after Ricoh's departure from the city. Annie has gone missing and Mik can only presume the Nukes have her as it is Tasha Krell, her Ranger Apprentice, who delivers the devistating message of the Nuke's arrival.
The mole that penetrated the Fellowship and the Legion - presumed to be the same man or woman - has not yet been found. Mik can barely take time for his family though he tries desperately to spend time with his wife even if his children suffer his absences. Without his brother, he must again run the daily workings of the Legion in Sabattann. He begins to delegate more and more responsibility to his officers at home as he has with his officers abroad.
He at last sends an ex-Shadow, Dylan Zane and Riane's mother Macy - made an honorary Freemen - on an intelligence and rescue mission to Demm. They are to join Ranger Reo in the search for Kirie.
As the summer in Sabattann wears on and grows hotter, Mik becomes more and more emtional, to make up for the absence of his brother. He has always been the logical twin, but Ricoh's emotional balance to his logic is far enough away that he can not easily contact his brother's mind. The separation forces Mik to fill in the blanks on his own.
More and more he becomes the man the Powers always wanted him to be and more and more he knows that Sabattann needs a Government or the only people who will survive the latest Nuke invasion will be the Freemen. He cares for far too many civillians to let that happen.
Someone must be found who will lead the non-military residents of the city. The factions in the city know it... the Legion, the Fellowship and local businessmen are at last joining together to make it happen. The Union can not remain neutral forever, nor can they remain the monopoly on health in a recovering world. The Cult will oppose anything organized for good... The Saint and her cult must be stopped and the city must prepare to defend itself against the Nukes who are inexoribly encroaching upon New Rydynn.
