I was angry. Screaming against powers that I could not even directly confront. The best I could do was become part of the conflict. Swim in its seething intensity. Unfortunately, I was no longer the center of conflict. It had no master, just a drive to exist. I suppose something like this was bound to happen. And now, we sit in a wasteland where conflict abounds without restraint.
When I was first banished from the heavens, I started conflict wherever I went. In the guise of the wandering wiseman, the trusted advisor. It took years to gain the trust of a people, and moments to shred it with the Church of the Nuclear Messiah. They sowed the seeds of conflict everywhere they went.
But I realized there was no future with the Church. I may no longer be a god, but I still see things as they are and could be. Insight and foresight. The Church was destined to succeed, to overpower the scattered remnants of opposition and end any conflict on this continent. Of course, Venexx, you probably knew more about that than I did.
So, I realigned my services with the Legion of Freemen. They had the numbers in this land, but not the technological prowess or resources of Perdoxx. So, I provided the technology they needed to contend with the Church. Pistols and rifles, the occasional trinket of exceptional worth. The money was a pleasant extra, but the hate and the aggression...it fed me.
Soon, though, I lost my interest in the bloodshed. That was Makabb's realm. I dealt in passion and perseverance, not suffering. In retirement, I came upon Pier 13. It was charmingly desolate, but, oddly, lacked the isolation it seemed to display. It was perfect.
I offered respite, a haven for huumunnity. In return, they provided their own conflict. You see, Venexx, huumunns thrive in conflict. They would not survive without it. I admit, though, that they preyed upon each other. Their vices were exploited, but not by me. I only offered gambling as a form of recreation. You, yourself, can not even argue against playing games with fate.
Besides, my hands are left clean. Can you blame the shadows for hiding the carastt?
