U.S. Navy November, 2002 What are they?Bands and Choruses
present several performances during the school year that are open to the
public. Traditionally, these include
three choral concerts and three band concerts. On occasion, a special event may take place, such as the
U.S. Navy Northeast Show Band Jazz Ensemble performances at NRHS in 2002 and
2004. These were free public
performances, with donations gratefully accepted. All donations received were assigned to the
NRHS FOM Piano Fund. How do they work? Each of the three district towns is tasked with “hosting”
one band and one choral event per school year. The host town is responsible for providing
the necessary volunteers and refreshments. Parent volunteers are critical to the success of concert
fundraisers. One or two chaperones are
required to keep performers organized off-stage, and multiple volunteers are
needed at the front of the house. There are three fundraising elements to each concert -
ticket sales, refreshments, and gift table – and all require volunteers to
make them work. · Ticket sales generate over 90% of the event’s profits. Parent/student volunteers sell tickets at the door, distribute free programs, and act as doorkeepers during the performance. Tickets are priced at $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students/seniors; children under 6 are free! · Refreshments are free of charge, but donations are gratefully accepted and generally generate 5-8% of the event’s profits. Parent volunteers provide baked goods and soft drinks, and parent/student volunteers man the refreshment stand at intermission and perform post-concert cleanup. · The gift table generates 3-5% of the event’s profits. Parent volunteers man the table for 30 minutes before showtime, during the intermission, and for 30 minutes after the show. |
