Piano From Two Views – Piano Debut Concert

Friends of Music wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to a trio of amazing local performers for sharing their gifts with us at our new piano’s debut concert.  Thanks also to Stow’s Applefield Farm for donating the Harvest decorations in the concert hall and in the lobby.

Ernest Goldman

Mr. Ernest Goldman opened the performance with Beethoven’s 32 Variations on C minor for Piano.

Mr. Goldman, of Stow, Massachusetts, has been a favorite of audiences in the Boston area for more than thirty years as an interpreter of piano music of the Classical and Romantic periods in solo works, chamber music, and piano concertos.  Prior to that, he was well known to music lovers in New Jersey, where he pursued a career in engineering physics.  He received his musical education in Vienna from teachers descending in a straight line from Beethoven; Goldman is separated from the great composer by only four generations.  Mr. Goldman is a co-founder of Sounds of Stow, which has featured him as soloist in 23 piano concertos since 1986.

Katherine Kleitz

Mr. Goldman was then joined by Ms. Katherine Kleitz to perform Poulenc’s Sonata for Flute and Piano.

Ms. Kleitz, a resident of Stow, received BM and MM degrees from the New England Conservatory and a PhD from Tufts University.  She studied flute with James Pappoutsakis, Michel Debost, and Jean-Pierre Rampal, and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.  She specializes in chamber music, which she performs with groups such as Arroyo, Bell’Aria, New England Voices, Joie de Vivre Dance Company, Current Dance Company, Sounds of Stow, and the Boston Theater Group.  Since 1987 Ms. Kleitz has been Artistic Director of Row Twelve Contemporary Music Ensemble, a chamber group that regularly premieres new compositions and performance art throughout New England

The Goldman-Kleitz Collaboration

Katherine Kleitz and Ernest Goldman have made music together since 1975.  They have played numerous recitals together, featuring music from the baroque to the twentieth century.  Their repertoire includes major works by J.S. and C.P.lE. Bach, Schubert, Beethoven, Prokofiev, Martinu and others.

Bruce Thomas

After a Brief Intermission, Mr. Bruce Thomas opened his performance with a moving gospel piece. His selections from many genres showcased the range of the new piano, closing with an improvisational piece. We were fortunate to hear several of Mr. Thomas’s own compositions as well.

Pianist/Composer/Arranger Bruce Thomas, a native of West Virginia, is an Associate Professor of Piano at The Berklee College of Music where he has taught for 23 years. A professional musician since the age of 12, his background is quite diverse, including rhythm & blues, rock, gospel, classical, and jazz.  A veteran of the Boston and New York City scenes, he has recorded with jazz legend Chet Baker, and performed with Ornette Coleman, Pat Metheny, Mike Metheny, John Scofield, Ernestine Anderson, and many R&B and pop artists including Gladys Knight. Mr. Thomas resides in Stow with his wife and two sons.
