Landstalker is another Zelda-style RPG that is severely overlooked and underrated. The only thing that really needs to be said before playing this game is that you should have some skill with video games before playing this. It is much more difficult than probably any game that any of you have played. If you consider Zelda games to be difficult, you haven't seen anything. Not that the game is impossible...you'll just have to find out. Story: Landstalker's story is actually fairly innovative for the Sega Genesis era. You are a treasure hunter named Nigel. You meet this fairy thing named Friday, and you travel to this strange island called Mercator in search of King Nole's Treasure. It sounds bad, but it is better than I can describe it without telling all of the story. There isn't all that much story development though. 16/20 Graphics: For the Genesis, Landstalker has really nice graphics. The land is 3-D and colorful. Enemies and the main character look very nice. There are very few flaws to these graphics, and it is one of the strong points of the game. These graphics are nearly flawless. The only complaint I can think to make is that some of the maps are overused (dungeons, towns, etc.). 19/20 Sound: The music in this game is excellent. Some of the field tunes are perfect for a field tune thing, and all of the other music is great too. A good rule to follow is that if you can think of a tune from the game right off of the top of your head, the music is good. I can think of four or five. Some of the music is overused, though, and the sound effects such as jumping are sketchy. 18/20 Gameplay: The gameplay is pretty satisfactory. Attacking with your sword is pretty simple, and so is movement, though a problem would be that you can't walk diagonally. The game is difficult. Some of the jumping challenges are pretty hard, because jumping isn't too easy in this game. It isn't easy because the game is 3D. This is probably the hardest game that I have ever played (in my opinion anyway). Some of the puzzles are pretty difficult, and combat can be difficult because of enemies surrounding you. A lot of people don't like challenge in a video game, and would mark this game down majorly, but I think it adds to a game if you actually have to work to beat it. 18/20 Fun: The only problem with the game is the high frustration level you'll get when playing it if you can't solve a puzzle or beat some boss. But I like that challenge. If you are up to the challenge of a game like Landstalker, pick it up at FuncoLand. It's cheap, and playing on a ROM would be pretty hard. Trust me. The only thing I'm really knocking points off on is the shortness of the game. 18/20 FINAL SCORE: 89/100 |
