Punk Rock is...Gay?!
By: Matt Pietro

Since the begining of time (or some time around then) man has been known for its need for entertainment. Entertainment keeps us busy, it keeps us happy, and it keeps us from hurting other people (sometimes). Sometime around the mid 1900's, rock surfaced and changed a lot of people around the world. But since the late 90's, man has been plauged with the ugly retarded cousin of rock; "punk rock."

punk (pungk) adj. Slang 1.a) Of poor quality;worthless. b) Weak in spirits or health.
2.a) A young person, especially a member of a rebellious counterculture group. b) An inexperienced young man.
3.a) A young man who is the sexual partner of an older man. b) A prostitute.

As you can see, "punk" has many different meanings in the english language, but they all have one thing in common...it is obviously not a good thing to be a "punk." So why are skaters and "posers" as some call them, proud to be "punk"? I think it's a combination of a misunderstanding of the word and pop-culture.

Every punk rock song is always about one of these three subjects; girls, skateboarding, and killing yourself. So why are teens around America addicted to this music when it's about such depressing views? I don't think anyone knows, most people listen to punk rock to give themselves a false identity, such as being a skateboarder or surfer, or mabye they just want to fit in with the "punk" group of their school(which usually consist of long-time potheads and skateboarders, so it's most likely going to go downhill from there). They may want to do this because they need more friends, or want to hook up with a certain girl. Reasons for wanting to become a punk go on and on, which gives the uninformed person the idea that "punk is cool!"

Sadly, punk rock is like a disease...once someone in a school or group is infected, it quickly spreads until everyone that person knows has turned "punk." This recently happened at my school, when a skater-chick from Cali. moved in and became friends with all of the preppy girls. Before I knew it, all the girls were dressing like Avril Lavign and listening to Blink 182...this really pissed a lot of guys off to know that these girls were dumb enough to be persuaded to change because of one person.

I hope you now understand better about what it means to be a punk. If we all wish to someday completely get rid of punk rock, there's only one thing we can do...stop listening to this crappy-ass music! Go listen to rap or hard rock...or country, I don't care.
