When I first heard that there was going to be a Rocky video game, I was naturally excited about it. When I finally got the game and beat it, I couldn't tell if it was really a great game or if I just liked it because I'm a fan of the Rocky movies. So I decided to try a review of it.... Story: Naturally, the game follows the storyline of the Rocky movies. However, the only direction in the storyline is in the transition from movie to movie in Story Mode, where they have a little animation scene of some important points from the movies. But if you hadn't seen the movies, it would make no sense. Also, using animation instead of clips from the real movies made it not nearly as good as it could have been. It's still a boxing game, though, and it shouldn't have much of a story. 14/20 Graphics: This is a questionable issue. The graphics are just....pretty good. Rocky's face is a little disformed, and his head is huge. The fighting graphics are....pretty good, again. Overall, they're better than average. 15/20 Sound: Obviously, Gonna Fly Now (the Rocky theme) is going to be a key part of this. The problem is that it is overplayed. There really is no fight music, but the crowd sound isn't terrible. Each fighter has his own little theme song, and they're pretty good and usually match the character's personality. The songs/sound are good, but it could have been better. Instead of playing the same Gonna Fly Now every time for Rocky, they could have used a different version or used one of the other songs that exist in the Rocky movies, and set it to be random for Rocky, considering he is the main character. But the sound is still good. 17/20 Gameplay: The gameplay is surprisingly deep. There are tons of combo punches you can throw and plenty of ways to dodge and block. However, it is very easy to get caught in the ropes with no way out, and it is almost impossible to stop someone who repeatedly jabs you. But those are the only bad points, really. The gameplay only gets better as you get better. Also, the training mode is a fun way to raise your stats in between fights. If you suck at the mini-games that are played to raise your stats, you can Auto-Train for half of the points possible. Some of the games are really hard, but that's a good thing anyway. Easy games are boring. 17/20 Fun: The game was fun, with three difficulty levels to conquer and secret characters to gain. It would have been more fun if more people had bought the game, so that there could have been fair multiplayer fights. The training mode also adds to the fun greatly, and you can replay the animation clips that you unlock. There are some secret things, but not a ton. And the game does get repetitive after a while. The game was pretty good, but I think it could have been much better and had the potential to be much better. Oh well. 16/20 FINAL SCORE: 79/100 |
