| My Best Day.... I Love Lucy by © moon_grace My best day was the day I got married. First, it was a double outdoor wedding with me and one of my sisters. There was a lot of confusion with 3 families/friends groups, 2 brides and 2 grooms. It also happened to be one of the hottest days in the fall that has ever been in history, but of course, when you can't breath cause you are cinched into an antique corsett...I think lack of oxygen automatically makes you feel hotter. We were getting everything ready to go. All was well till I couldn't find my garter. Being the sweet and always calm person I am, I began to throw a fit they still talk about in hushed tones today. My poor brother-in-law was so upset because I said, "That's it, I'm NOT going without my garter." He went to the local drug store and bought me one to shut me up and lure me into the car. Gotta love Eckerds, they keep one of everything- even a wedding garter. We get to the wedding and my sister and I are in the top of this double decker picnic shelter fixing our hair and laughing and carrying on until my dad comes up the steps and says, "Uhm girls, do you want to get married today? The little girl with the guitar has started her music twice now." EGADS! Twenty yards away and still late! Ok, we make it past all the people in chairs and down to the preacher. We had decided to say our own vows and were standing there going through the ceremony. Finally, the preacher gets to speak his part and he stands there and goes, "These four golden rings, symbolizing..." Well, I lost it. I'm sure at least the first two rows of guests had to hear me giggle because I am thinking, "Oh you observant one." (The rings were SILVER with turquoise, Circle of Waters.) Where or how he saw "Golden" in those rings, was too much for me not to laugh about. There was one beautiful moment when a breeze came through. The water on the lake we stood before began to ripple in the breeze. I thought, "Yes, it's a good day." Maybe it was seeing the water ripple and the leaves flutter down from the nearby trees, maybe it was the extra oxygen the Creator sent on that wind seeing I obviously needed more air since I couldn't BREATH in that corsett- I am not sure which, but that moment made it for me. Lucky for me, cause the curse of I LOVE LUCY was not finished with me yet. Like I said, it was a hot, hot day and we were outside. All the things for the reception were on my poor brother-in-law's truck. There was this punch bowl that we were going to use. It was set off to one side as everything was being set up. He had parked in the sun. The table cloths and cakes and all were on the tables. He ran to get the punch bowl and set it on the table. Now, my mother is one to try to take care of little details. She had iced down that punch to where it was ICE cold. He placed the sparkling glass bowl on the table and started pouring in that ice cold punch. Cold met hot. The old cut glass punch bowl that my mother had never let us even touch as children..it BROKE! Broke right in two pieces! Punch ran everywhere. I remember standing there looking at it run. Okay....We go to take pictures. Might as well save this great Kodak moment. We got to the picture where I am to take off the garter. I have a sense of humor (sick as it may be) and not realising the true nature of the family I was marrying into I had decided earlier to at least have a laugh on my wedding day. I pulled up that wedding dress to produce a garter just below a pair of knee-length flaming bright red pantaloons. Oh yes, they were real impressed. There was a lot of 'approval' in that silence. I could just (brrrrrrr) feel it. Photographer almost dropped his camera from the shock. I didn't care, the four of us getting married were in stitches by this point and that was all that mattered that day. So, it was a few things very right, a few things totally unplanned. All in all, it was a very good day. I tell myself that because I sure do remember it. moon_grace. |
