It was pretty cool. Nobody was there, so it was pretty free-roaming. We took some group pictures (the beginning of many) and tried climbing parts of the wall. Good times. Afterwards we headed out to another ruin – an abbey. Which just happened to be on the other side of town. (By the end of our trip in Roscommon, we were all pretty tired from carryout our heavy backpacks). We finally found the abbey, but couldn’t find the entrance. So we went through the neighboring field, looking for an entrance next to the barb-wired fence, which surrounds the abbey. With no luck, we finally just hopped over the fence and went a-looking around the ruins. Another photo-op moment. We did eventually find the entrance on the other side of the abbey… Finish this later – time for lecture.

Have the HaiR soundtrack stuck in my head. Guess the best way to resolve that is to listen to it. Yippie! “I believe in love…I do believe in love. Do you believe in love?” and so forth. In any case. Today was pretty meh. Besides being a very crappy-weather day, luckily I didn’t do any digging.

Instead I did some geo-physics surveying. Which was pretty interesting to learn. We did have quite a few heavy showers-moments so I did get pretty soaked. Though after dinner I finally went out and bought a rain outfit. (finally! No more getting clothes dirty and/or wet!) Tonight we had a lecture on an archaeological excavation going on in Norway, about the Vikings. It was pretty interesting. The excavation is using many methods for their work – including oceanography, geo-physics, and of course archaeology. I tried going 3 days w/o drinking. I lasted almost 2 days. (No alcohol in me yesterday), but alas I caved in earlier tonight when I ordered a screwdriver (OJ and vodka). Sigh. Mebbe another day. Maybe if there was more to do here in this town, I wouldn’t be drinking every night. On a kind of similar note, a few of us decided to go walking tomorrow morning. Yippie! I miss walking in the mornings. Back home I would go on 45-60 min. walks, but since I’ve been here,I haven’t had the chance. But now that I’ve found some people to join me, things could change! Woohoo! (The only downside is that I’ll be getting up at 6:45 am. Eek!) So to finish Saturday, after viewing the abbey we took the bus to Athlone and went walking through the city to our B&B. We were finally able to drop off our bags!
We visited the Athlone castle, (which turned out to be more like a museum, unlike Roscommon’s castle, this one wasn’t a ruin and had certain hours that it was opened.) We had dinner at (get this) an Italian restaurant owned by French men (in Ireland nonetheless!) Oh! Some interesting observations of the day – In Roscommon hair salon - “Curl up and Dye”, while driving on the roads – one sign “slow”, 15 seconds later – “slower”. Yeah, so later that night we headed out to a pub and played a great card game called Asshole. So to sum up – great, fun, tiring day. Okay. Time for bed.
Cheers!
