Have you always worried about them breaking off while hunting?
Been looking for an easy answer to these questions?
Read on...
I make my longtails using hardwood dowels, and to date have yet to break one. The only "issue" is storage, but I'm sure you'll find a solution to that like I did...
![]() Before you cut your bird out, while the block is still square drill a couple of dimples along the tail center line with a 1/2" drill. |
![]() Connect the outsides of the drilled hole profiles |
![]() Saw along the INSIDE of the lines stipping at the rump. |
![]() Cut out your bird, carve it as you normally would, hollow if needed and you should have something that looks like this.. |
![]() Using the same drill now CAREFULLY drill down to "cut" out the piece of wood where the tail will go. |
![]() Should look like this now... |
![]() Using a hand drill find the angle that pleases you and drill into the tail base an inch or so.... |
![]() A piece of hardwood 1/2" dowel now becomes our tail.. |
![]() Glue it in place and fill the gaps with epoxy putty, sand, paint and go hunting! |
