Joseph Chaloupka Sr. Family
Joseph Chaloupka was born in the Hradec Kralove (Konnigratz in German) region of Bohemia (currently the Czech Republic) probably in or near the village of Castolovice, 20 March 1840. He emigrated to the US around 1855 with his parents and 7 siblings. The family first settled in Monmouth Township, Jackson County, Iowa (map). Joseph enlisted in the Union Army 26 September 1864 in Davenport, Scott County, IA. He served as a private in Co. F, 16th Regiment Iowa Veteran Infantry. He was mustered out 30 May 1865 near Washington, D.C. Joseph suffered injuries related to his service and was granted a pension by the government. Upon his death, his wife Elizabeth received a widow's pension. Joseph is the only one of John and Catherine's sons to serve in the Civil War. On 16 January 1868, Joseph and his brother Henry had a double wedding at the home of their parents in, Monmouth, Jackson County, IA. Joseph married Bettie Duachueck (Elizabeth Kvasnicka) and Henry married Anna Schoughic (Anna Sefcik). Together, Joseph and Elizabeth had 10 children. By 1870, Joseph and Elizabeth had settled in Richland Township, Guthrie County, IA two households away from Elizabeth's parents according to the 1870 census. By that time, the couple had 1 child, Anna. The couple remained in Guthrie County until their deaths. Joseph passed away 31 May 1916 and was buried in Brethren Cemetery, Cass Township, Guthrie County, IA. Elizabeth passed away 11 years later on 22 September 1927 and was also buried in Brethren Cemetery. Children of Joseph and Elizabeth:
