JOHN CHALOUPKA CALLED WEDNESDAY
PIONEER SETTLED ON JONES COUNTY FARM OVER 75 YEARS AGO.
WAS GREAT LOVER OF THE OUTDOORS
Spent Later Years Hunting and Fishing - Was Last Survivor of Old Gun Clubs.
John Chaloupka, Sr., 90, passed away at his residence, 1410 Pine street, Wednesday, morning at 9 o'clock.
He was born in Koenigratz, Austria, March 25, 1836, and was the oldest of a family of twelve children [all other sources say 9 children]. He came to Jones county, Iowa, in 1850, and settled on a farm [family first shows up in Jackson County in 1856, and it's thought that they emigrated in 1855]. In 1863 he was married to Miss Rose Zednick [he married Rosa Novotny in 1861] and moved to Dubuque, where he worked as a tailor until failing eye sight compelled him to give up his work. He then worked as a taxidermist and collected and mounted specimens of birds and animals of this locality. He was a great lover of the out of doors and in his later years spent most of his time fishing and hunting. All his companions on his many trips have passed on ahead of him, he being the last survivor of the gun clubs of 1865 to 1900. Every one of those early river days knew John Chaloupka - humble, sincere and honest, who made friends with a large circle.
He is survived by three sons, Joseph, John and Edward, and one daughter, Anna, Dubuque also five grandchildren and two sisters. Mrs. Mrs.[error in the obituary] Kunce, Yale counyt [county is misspelled in the obituary, also, it is the city of Yale in Guthrie County], Iowa, and Mrs. Kostasek, Monmouth, Iowa.
The body is now at the Walton and Schroeder mortuary from where services will be held Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The burial will be made in Linwood cemetery.
