Atonement, a Melodic Black Metal band from Figueira da Foz, Portugal, was formed in August 1998 by Mário Loureiro (guitars),Rui Abreu (vocals),Pedro Loureiro (drums) and Gualdino Abreu (guitars). Later that same year, a bass player, Nuno Fontes and 2 keyboard players, Diana Gomes and Ana Penicheiro joined the original group. With only 3 months of existence the first concerts started to take place, mostly live performances in private parties. As time went on, Atonement lost one of its members, Ana Penicheiro. This shook the band's structure slightly but the problem was overcome and the group managed to move on. A year after, they released their first demo cd, entitled ‘The Rehearsals’. When all seemed to go well, internal problems forced Atonement to stop its activity and cancel important shows. Drummer Pedro Loureiro and keyboard player Diana Gomes left the band. These 2 elements were never replaced because there are not many musicians in the band's residential area. After Atonement's extinction, the remaining elements went their separate ways. Then in the year 2000, Mário Loureiro (guitar) decided to create a new band, but without success. Leaving the guitar behind, he started playing drums to be able to ontinue his project. Old members from Atonement and 2 new guitar players came and gone. Everything seemed to go wrong... In October 2000, Pedro Loureiro, the original drummer, came back with lots of new ideas and conviction. Later that year Atonement raised from the ashes, decided to start a new life. In April 2003, they released their second demo cd, ‘Beyond the Shrine of Doom’. Currently their line-up is: DOMINOSFERATU (summoning screams), LUCIFUS-DYBUK (mourning chords), UHKTTOSYS (heavy artillery), HANAMORIARDRAK (soul bell) and DARKMASTER (grief howls).
