He runs, sick, to stage-left. Enter Cassandra. Two soldiers grab an arm each and pull her down so she kneels on the ground.
Cassandra:
After the war's been won
After our proud white walls burn
After the death of the sun
That's when the heros return.
That's when the City glows,
Not with proud joy but with flame.
And the faces I loved lie
In stacks and the battle cries
Tear through the air and I
Feel phantom hands snatch my hair---
Nobody there.
High heavens, let me see;
What will happen to me?
Harlotry, slavery, chains,
Strangers with masks
That conceal hidden pain;
Someone I love
Struck from above
Water turned damask by dusk.
Just when you gasp for a breath,
Somebody pushes you down;
Just when you slow for a rest,
Water will rise and you'll drown.
Heaven plays brutal tricks,
Changing the world as it moves
But I thought I could swear
That the ending was fair
And we wouldn't despair
But our hope melts away into air
Smoke in the air.
