And
so came the day I had waited for so long with expectation mixed with
fear. I can tell you right away that I was dead wrong about the "doing
too well on the placement test" part I wrote about earlier. I think
this class is too easy for me. Well it is good repetition and of course
I donīt know it all of it yet but most of the other students seem to
lack knowledge about a lot of things I already know. Well I guess I
wonīt be the bad student in the class after all. But then again, the
kanji problem is there to haunt me. I have to keep practicing writing by
hand. Anyhow, the other students were really nice and talkative. They
started talking to me as soon as I got there and I think I will make
friends quite quick. And they treated me with Chinese snacks and candy.
As far as I can tell all students except me, a Russian girl and one or
two Korean students, everyone is Chinese. Which means that there is a
lot of talking in Chinese all the time. In fact they were a bit noisy
during class too. I feel that it is disrespectful towards the teacher
not to listen to what they say and talk about other things during class
(I know I would be disturbed by it as a teacher), but when spoken to by
another student it is kind of hard to explain that without seeming cold
and it would probably take more time than just answering. Anyway the
classes were divided into three parts of 45 minutes each from 9:00 to
12:25. I thought it felt a little short but thatīs the way (aha aha) I
like it.
During the first break a guy came in to
the classroom and up to me. He asked if I was Swedish (in Swedish) and
introduced himself as Daniel. He and I are the only Swedish students
there and he has been studying there for a year. Before that he
couldnīt speak Japanese at all. Concidering that, I was impressed with
his speaking ability. He is even in a class over me in school. We walked
together to my dormitory talking about this and that. It is not very far
to walk so if I had a bike I would use it to school instead of the
expensive subway (200 yen minimum charge one way). Daniel
lives in a dormitory just around the block where I live. Actually, it is
owned by the same company that owns the dormitory where I stay. So he
knew a lot of things I had no idea about. For one thing he told me you
could get access to internet in the rooms where he stays, so I asked my
manager if it was possible here too and it was. So now I have a fast
internet connection on my room. I wish I had known that before I joined
the internet café place near Odori. Another thing Daniel mentioned was
that his manager had lent him a tv set. I asked my manager about that
too and he said he would phone the main office and ask. Uh-oh, I hope
there arenīt any hidden charges in all this... If there is a charge it
might be better to buy a used one. It is easy to get according to the
people I have spoken to lately. There is a charge of several thousand
yen for throwing away big electric appliances so people are even giving
them away. According to my sources...
In the last log I wrote that I might have
to switch back to the summer jacket again soon. Well if the weather will
be like it was today I was wrong. Unfortunately I didnīt see a
thermometer today but it must have been over 20š C! It was so hot! I
walked around in a t-shirt all afternoon. And not because I got spring
feelings and walked around with goosebumps but because wearing anything
more would be too hot. What a complete change in but a week! When I came
here there was a lot of snow and below 5š C and now... I had to open
the windows to make my room a bit cooler. It is even hot now in the
evening.
I think Iīm going to celebrate this
wonderful day with a beer and some nori flavored potatochips. Or maybe a
banana. Cheers to all of you!
