I have decided to try to keep a log over my activities in Japan so that my friends and family can keep track of what is going on in my life. Also it might provide an intresting introduction to Japan and its culture for people who haven't been there. I will try to update once a week and complement the text with pictures taken with my digital camera throughout my intended year-long stay in Japan.
May 17 2001, Sapporo - Emma, summer weather and fever...
Whoa! I have been really worn out lately but Iīll try and keep up with the logging. This one is a bit late now...

Having some delicious miso ramen with EmmaThis weekend was the greatest! I finally got to see Emma when she and her parents came here on Sunday. It was...great! And the weather gods were with us too. It was nearly 30š C for three days! The Odori park in central Sapporo was completely packed with people. However, on Do you know the feeling...? Monday I started feeling a bit sick and on Tuesday I was completely wasted. I went to class but I felt dizzy and couldnīt concentrate and made everybody in class worry about me so the next day I stayed at home, taking it easy. At night, my sister called me and we talked about this and that and before we knew it it was midnight here. Whoops. "No time for studies, Iīll have to do it tomorrow..." And then my mother phoned about some things before to bed. And then I just read a few pages in a manga book (H2, book 16). And then a few more and before I knew it the time was 02:30. Dow! (imagine Homerīs voice here) When I woke up at 07:00 as usual I felt like a zombie. I was only half aware of what I was doing until I had had breakfast and returned to my room. "I should get some more sleep...". And so I decided that it was better that I went to class in a good state than doing the homework in time, and set my alarm clock for 11 and fell asleep. When I woke up by the alarm I was if possible even more tired. But I ate a couple of slices of super soft bread and took a painkiller and took off...

There are some leathal animals around here Iīll have you know. a couple of weeks ago a man got eaten by a bear in the edges of southern Sapporo (I live just to the northwest of central Sapporo). The bear then buried him! It was shot shortly after. Also, there are apparently huge aggressive wasps that kills a couple of people with their poison every year. Those people are probably oversensitive to the poison but anyhow it probably hurts like hell to be stung so I am worrying already. It was better last year when I had no idea about it...

They show some anime based on old Swedish stories on tv here actually. One of them is Nils Holgerssonīs Fantastic Journey. Of course there is a weird unswedish feeling over it (kind of like the more recent Pippi Longstockings animations). For example Nils (Nirusu) wears clogs like the ones in Holland. In one episode there was a man with a paper on which something was written. In scenes you could see the top line and it was written in swedish: "Ödmjukast jag..." ( meaning "Most humbly I..."). Another anime is Teskedsgumman (I donīt know the English title but it means The Spoon Lady). It is about a woman who gets as small as a spoon some times. The drawing style in the anime is similar to that in the Smurfs for some reason.

If you want to know what the latest thing in shoes is here, it was said in a morning show that the new thing is sunisan. You donīt know what it is? Well it is short for sneaker sandals. Someone though that since sneakers has become popular lately, and sandals are popular in summer, a cobination of the two must be great. The result looks like...well actually it looks exactly like regular beach slippers only they have laces. I think I would like my beach slippers without laces...
