Quest for beauty costs Emily her life

I refer to the article "Quest for beauty costs Emily her life" (ST 28th April 2000) Corrective surgery is often carried out on young children with congential deformities in order that they may live a more normal life. Such surgery is often difficult. It is never done to make a child more "beautiful". Complications can occur in any surgery minor or major. It is unfortunate that in this case Emily lost her life because of complications. The press has a duty to the public. Sensationalisation misleads the public and help neither the living (Emily's parents) nor the dead. To state that Emily lost her life in a "quest for beauty" is cruel, especially to her parents.
