The Chiropteran Dictionary

Bats have their own language. Sometimes it’s hard to understand exactly what’s what. Here’s a helpful dictionary to aid you in reading and writing all things the bats may use. This dictionary was created and therefore is copywrite to SilverRougue AKA Inle-Thlay of Nepenthes Warren.

 

- Ak: Yes.

- Aqu: Water.

- Ash: Small.

- Chiloot: Bad sounding - e.g. the sound an owl makes.

- Clah: Daytime.

- Deeeth: Disgraced, unworthy, unwholesome. Can also mean "exiled".

- Der: Fate.

- Eshee: A bat living away from its colony that travels from place to place.

- Gatha: Guano.

- Hek: A prince, leader, or royalty. Usually used as a prefix.

- Hekoel: "master hearer", A psychic, or one with incredibly keen senses.

- Hek-Shaxunziki: The bat folk hero. Her name means "Queen-Magic-Wings" = the Queen with Magical Wings.

- Hek-Shazaht: The Moon, personified as a goddess by bats. The name means "Night Queen" or "Dark Mother".

- Hek-Zhakatch: The sun, personified as a god by bats. The name means "Bright Father" or "King Cruelty".

- Hekaqu: River.

- Heza: Hollow tree, cave, etc. Anywhere where bats might sleep during the day.

- Hyzaz: Hello.

- Inee: Last or Only.

- Izfek: Word used to annouce something as dumb.

- Izzy: Confusion, chaos, panicking, completely overwhelmed with fear. But can also, in certain contexts, mean "idiot."

- Katch: Literally, light; But to bats it often carries the idea of badness, evil, cruelty, and death. - Katchachi: Destroyed, murdered, finished. Denotes a terrible catastrophe.

- Keeech: Nice, pleasant. Can also mean "dark".

- Koelo: Oak Trees (Because Hek-Shaxunzig is said to have sheltered in an oak tree after she was attacked by the sun, these trees are sacred to bats.)

- Kreeah: Place.

- Lalil: Sing; speak.

- Lean: Otter.

- Man: Human. (Plural: Mani)

- Mankreeah: Opposite "Man Place" Land covered with concrete, brick and asphalt. In general, anywhere man has destroyed.

- Manzak: "Man Thing". Anything made by humans, ranging from a car to a house to the little white sticks they burn in their mouths.

- Mip: Any moth or butterfly. (Plural: Mipi)

- Miz: Any insect that bats will eat (Plural: Mizi)

- Nalta: Goodbye.

- Oel: To hear, to listen.

- Pleeet: Silver (Valuable)

- Pryo: A cat.

- Sha: A female bat. Also carries the meaning "mother." (Used as name. For example; Shamip)

- Shil: Any fruit that bats will eat.

- Shooz: Wind.

- Shree: Lover.

- Shry: Fur.

- Tal: No.

- Tibbra: Rabbit.

- Tzah: Elderly bat who deserves respect.

- Unremembered Fear: Rabies (Same as with foxes, as it is a borrowed word)

- Va: Old.

- Zag: A fox. (Plural, Zagi)

- Zaht: Nighttime.

- Zak: Thing.

- Zakash: Small Thing (Used as a pet name for younglings).

- Zakatch: "bad things" Enemies of bats. (Owls, Men, Rabies, Daytime, etc.)

- Zeem: Hope.

- Zha: Male (Used in name. For example, Zhakatch)

- Zig: To fly, to glide. Can also mean "wings". (Plural: Zigi)

- Zizi: Sleep.

- Zizza: Soul, Ghost, Spirit.

- Zla: Owl.

- Zlaclah: "day owl" Hawk.

- Zlar: Bat.

- Zlarclah: "Day-Bat" Can mean most birds, but especially means "Raven."
