This series was a Taiwanese series that was based on the life of Empress Wu, the first female emperor in China's history. Phan Ngienh Tu (PNT) successfully played the role of Wu Chau (Vo My Nuong), who is historically known as Wu Zetian, Vo Tac Thien. I really enjoyed PNT's performance. My only criticism is that the series had too much dialogue between the aristocrats. PNT's excellent portrayal led to sequel, which focused on Princess Tai Ping (Thai Binh Cong Chau). Princess Tai Ping, according to history, was the favorite daughter of Empress Wu. Empress Wu felt that her daughter resembled her in appearance and judgement.
I personally admire Empress Wu, even though she was ruthless in her quest for power. However, looking at her status, one can understand that being ruthless was the only option for her to survive. Considering that women were discriminated upon (however, during the Tang dynasty, the status of women did improve and were given more opportunities than in the past) during that time, her actions seemed legitimate. I have always wondered how pretty she was. After all, she was the concubine of both Emperor Li Shimin and Emperor Li Zhi. I think this is a very interesting fact. Overall, her brilliance has left an everlasting impression in China's history.
