For the visiting
yachtsman Fiskardo is a perfect port of call with its picturesque and
sheltered harbour. Tavernas and restaurants right on the waterfront,
lovely beaches nearby and unspoilt countryside to stretch the legs. For
lovers of the sea who nevertheless would prefer the floor didn't move or
would rather read a good book than a chart then the solution could well be
a holiday in either of the two comfortable and delightful Waterfront
Apartments. They are situated immediately above the Captain's Cabin
restaurant, where the genial Tassos Matsukis has been welcoming new
customers and old friends for many years.
This is one of the more
historic houses in Fiskardo, having been owned by the same family for over
two hundred years. The present owner, Makis, has named each apartment in
honour of his parents, Taki and Eleni. His grandfather, also Makis, as is
the custom in Greek families, owned a trading schooner, which was wrecked
off Poros. His grandmother would often stand at one of the tall
first-floor windows to wait for her husband's ship to sail safely into the
harbour.
The apartments have been
carefully modernised and as the bedrooms are at the rear of the building,
above a quiet alley, a good nights sleep is assured. There is a spacious
living/dining room with two sofa beds and an open plan kitchenette with
fridge. The apartments are airy and cool, and the interior decoration is
extremely good. A shower room completes the accommodation.
This is life (almost) on
the ocean wave at its very best, and if the real thing appeals, a word
with Tassos, or the friendly neighbours next door at Pama Travel will get
you a days skippered sailing. You can explore beneath the waves with an
instructor from the fully PADI certificated diving school, cruise round
the islands or try a peaceful voyage along the coast in a own small hire
boat. Guests at Waterfront can even enjoy a quick dip in the small pool
attached to the Karteri Apartments just behind the accommodation. |
