A Theological Perspective on Cloning

in this interview, Laurie Zoloft, the director of bioethics at Northwestern University tells her thoughts on the morality of cloning.

At stake are the boundaries between life and death, between self and others.
In the year 1996, Dollie (the sheep) was cloned
The scientific world claims that they are far away from human , cloning < Clone-aid=claims that it has cloned the first human baby-but later proven to be a hoax.
question asked morally...because we can clone, should we?

Could possibly clone DNA of dying people and remake/recreate them-but should we Zoloft says that cloning is not about life and birth, but about reclaiming lost history.
example: cloning a family lost in the Holocaust ...then this cloning becomes more about death than life.
Ezekiel 37 read in interview

Can we as human beings make others?-Tradition in literature of the "Golem" (with DNA could you make a man?-yes)
Jews often looked to Golem character in literature to end their suffering, but Golem's flaw is that he/it is detached from humanity.(example of ), Midrash to understand the reality of cloning)

Brings up the point that some say, cloning is like having twins...is it?-No, it is more like wanting someone who you can't live without.
How would clones be perceived in reality/how would they perceive reality back?-
(Fred Dings), Letter to Genetically Engineered Super Humans.

ability to clone babies is a part of ."Advanced Reproductive Technology."
Argue that the invention of Birth Control, Contraceptives and surrogate. mothers has led o w world in which cloning of humans doesn't seem so crazy..doesn't say that surrogate families are bad, but that they can become corrupt when they dehumanize life
(example: buying/selling of ."gametes")
Samuel Chapter 1 is referenced
Wise to understand cloning as a question of Faith...
Religious voices must frame arguments against cloning differently, not on rights of mother, or rights of the fetus...but on the ideas of Justice and Duty
must face questions like: when does life become ."human"?
