There are many different types of canaries so I am going to give some basics. Perches should be placed at varying heights and distances so he bird can exercise its wings. They are rarely interested in playing with toys, although they do enjoy swings. They may even use a plastic ladder, but be sure not to put too much in the cage.
Canaries love to bathe, particularly in warm weather. This helps them stay clean and happy. Placement of the cage is important to the health of the bird. The cage should be free of drafts of extreme heat or cold. They should also not be placed too close to windows or by gas appliances.
They do breed well in cages provided they have enough room. A cage should be at least 24in x 12in x 18in. They should be provided an open nest basket or a nest that attaches to the outside of the cage via a door.
They eat canary feed mix seeds as their main source of food. They should also be given mineral grit, greens (lettuce, spinach, silver beet) and egg food. They shouldalso be given a cuttle bone for extra minerals and to keep their beeks short. |
