I sat and watched the ships sail past
But never ever spied a mast.
Where were all the Brigintines?
Schooners, Brigs, and Barkintines?
Raised on salty tales was I
And dreams of the sea that will not die.
Forever my mind was fed upon
The silk ships out of old Hong Kong.

They say when I was only two
The last fourmaster and her crew
Arrived in Alberni on Vancouver Isle
And there hove-to and stayed awhile.
A square rigged ship with sails unfurled,
She carried dreams of another world.
If ever I should go to sea
Only white canvas shall carry me.
