OPENING STATEMENT
a. From the beginning of time everyone has worn some form of cover.
I earn my living in the clothing business. That means I have a natural curiosity about anything to do with clothes. The fact that I read like a hungry hog let loose in a delecatesson(everything in sight) has enlarged
my knowledge of the role that clothing has had in our lives. This in turn
led to a greater interest in all the strange phenomena connected to
clothing. I just feel that this is too good to keep to myself,hence this
book.
b. I feel there is a real need to be aware of the role of clothing in our lives; how it guides and alters our judgement about the way we act towards
our fellow man/woman and react to them. If we are aware of the power of clothing we are armed against its control of our lives.
c. Clothing is not just a Canadian subject or a western world subject; it
is Universal to all humans on the face of this earth. Its impact is social, personal, and economical.
d. If you question the impact of clothing on your life, just take a short glance back into the 60’s and the disruption caused by the black outfits
worn by Bikers. The tight pants of Elvis Presley. The long dresses of the flower children. How these outfits scared the bejeebees out of the establishment and yet it was only clothing!
e. And what is clothing up to to-day? Busy as always making a comment.
This time it's on a health kick via the jogging suit,Addidda’s, shorts,
sweat suits, etc. You don’t just wear them, you have to live up to them. Clothes start out sometimes as an adjunct to an idea or concept or physical experiance and end up being the idea, the concept. They take over.
f. What’s down the road for us in the future? Will we be wise enough to
see them for what they are and not be frightened of them? Will we at last recognize that they are nothing but costumes we use for the roles we need
to play out? Our armour against a world that scares us - our escape into fantasy - our cuddle blanket of security to remind is of what we were or
are. Our ego trip to keep at bay the hounds of fear?
g. Arm yourself with knowledge! Beware of the pitfalls of ignorance!
For with every day that passes someone, somewhere is thinking of how to
get your bucks with a new idea, technology or invention in the world of fashion. It may be good or bad, safe or dangerous, intended or accidental,
but you can be sure it’s coming. Will you be ready for the next one?
