mixed trading - some stock prices went up, and some went down

stocks up, stocks down - the prices of stocks went up and some went down

the Dow was off - the Dow Jones Industrial Average was lower

trading was heavy - many stocks were bought and sold

NASDAQ - The National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation, a stock market  where stocks are bought and sold over a computer network

street estimates - estimates made by financial experts on Wall Street, a street in New York City where The New York Stock Exchange is located.

high tech sector - companies in the computer industry

earnings loss or gain - the money a company makes or loses

the transports - companies in the transportation business such as trains and airplanes

new highs - the prices of some stocks were higher than they ever were

all time high - the highest ever in history

Dow Transport Index - an average of the stock prices of companies in the transportation business

state of the economy - how the economy of the country is doing at a given time

to take advantage of - to be able to make a profit

Eastern Standard Time - the time in the eastern part of the United States
