Kali Silat(Escrima)

Developed in the philippines, Kali has a long history dating back before the 1500's. The art was named after the "kalis", a 30-inch wavy-edged sword. When Ferdinand Magellan first arrived on the island in 1521 him and his men were attacked by the natives and so began a battle. Lapu Lapu, the natives' leader, killed Magellan and the Spaniards fled from the island. But before long the Spanish did take over the island and kali was banned. Then, like many ancient martial arts did, kali went underground and practices continued. Though it is still an active martial art today it is more commonly known by a different name: "Escrima".

Kali is known for it's quick and deadly techniques. In Kali(or escrima) the student is taught advanced knife fighting techniques and to kill quickly by going for the vital points and sometimes without being seen. This martial art uses knives and sticks as well as empty-hand and foot techniques. Kali is possibly the most practical modern martial art. Although it does include empty-hand and foot fighting, Kali emphasizes more on the weapon training than any other martial art.
