Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4
Something New!
The Tony Hawk Series is one of the best sport series in gaming today. The series has sold many copies, and is known for having something new to play with.
The first Hawk had characters, levels, and more. What set the game apart from other games was that it offered tasks that you can complete. By completing every task assigned in a level would grant you a video of the player. THPS also offered cool tricks from different players. Like Tony Hawks 900*!
The second dose of Hawk had the moves, 'No Comply' and 'Boneless'. These moves offered the option of higher jumps. In one of the levels, you have to jump to the top of the school. The same Hawk formula was in tacked, Characters, Levels, Tricks, Better Videos, and the challenges. This time, there were 10 per level. This game also had a level editor for you to make and play in. The game raised the bar in the Hawk series.
The third Hawk, was new! Neversoft wrote the game from the bottom up. They used the same engine for the first two, but this changed for the third one. The game offered bigger levels and all of the stuff that the Hawk series has always had. What made this game stick out, was the Revert button! You go up a ramp do a Judo, and right when you hit the ramp, you would hit the revert button, and then immediately do a manual. This would continue your combo, and then you could grind a bar or go up another ramp to keep your score going. The videos were even better in this version. What was a good feature that in the end was a big waste was the online mode (PS2 Only). The game featured it, but since Sony had yet release their Internet adapter (Note: They Still haven't. The funny thing, it was due out in November, and it won't be out till Late August 2002!), only people with USB modems, and who know how to get it working could play. The third Hawk raised the bar once again!
Well, I keep going on about the first three Hawks, its know time to get to the latest Hawk! For all of you who say, 'What's new this time?', are in for a surprise. First off Career mode has totally been changed. The levels are HUGE and bare! In the beginning. You take your pro skater out to a level (The first level is a town.) and skate around. Your levels are kind of bare. So how do you fix this? Show 'em your skills. As you skate your level, you'll find people that need your help. A Pro might need you to get the crowd to move. So you pull off some fancy moves for the crowd, and their satisfied. Well then the person you did this for, will then add ramps or other things. So overtime you'll grow your levels into massive skate parks! As you go on, you can grab the back of a cab and take it to another town (a la Back to the Future? No Biff yet.). Like the next level is the Zoo. Lots go on in the Zoo. Monkey's throw their crap at their glass cages, and you can watch it slowly creep down the glass. Some of the things you do, will be starting stampedes and getting people pissed off. So far these two levels are the only ones that have been really shown.
So career mode sounds cool, but what else is new? Well the Spine Transfer. You go up a ramp and there is another ramp on the other side. You then hit the spine transfer button, and you go up and back down on the other side, instead of going up. If you do get board of skating around, since there is no time limit, you always can play the minigames. Like Tennis or Basketball. These are just a few that will be avaliable. The revert is back, to help you rack up your points. Also look for new tricks that will be added to expand your mind to the world of skateboarding.
Well if you were wondering if Tony Hawk 4 would offer online play, you may be disappointed. The PS2 version is a definite, but the GameCube and Xbox versions may not come with online features. Why? Nintendo really isn't offering much for getting the GameCube Online. So that's one downfall. But, there is a slight chance that you might get to play online. Phantasy Star Online so far, is the only game this year for GameCube that will offer Online Play up and till now. Since the Modem/Broadband Adapter(s) will be available in September, October time, Neversoft might just go ahead and add online play to the Cube version. It is slim, but there is a chance.
For those of you who are new to the Hawk series, you're going to have one heck of a time. Those of you who are veterans are still up for a nice treat. This Hawk will fly November 2002!
