ROWLING AREA TREKKING

26 DAYS
CODE: NTE/TREK/001

The Rowaling Valley is an east-west valley lying close to the border with Tibet between the Tamba Kosi and the Khumbu Himal area. For many years the valley was closed to trekkers, but has recently opened provided that the trekking party has permission and has paid to climb either of the two trekking peaks in the area - Ramdung or Parchamo. Parchamo lies above the Tesi Lapcha Pass, which connects the Rowaling with the Khumbu. Whilst the mountain can be approached from the east (Khumbu), it was not previously permitted to actually traverse the pass because of the closure of the Rowaling, and so the through journey was not possible. The recent relaxation in regulations has opened up one of the most spectacular routes in the Nepal Himalaya.
The Rowaling Valley itself is populated by Sherpas many of whom are also involved in the trekking business, but their families retain their homes in the area as the valley provides wonderful high grazing country during the summer months and produces excellent potatoes, and lower down some millet and barley. In the winter many of the villagers move down from Nagaon and even Beding to lower altitudes, as being a steep-sided valley the small doses of sunshine it receives is quickly lost. It becomes bitterly cold from January to March.
Lower down on the approaches to the valley there is a good cross-section of population with Chhetris and Bahuns gradually giving way to Tamangs and other hill tribes in the middle foothills. The surrounding country will fascinate the botanist as it varies from almost tropical in the lower reaches of the Tamba Kosi to pure alpine and even arctic higher up the valley. In between there is good farming and forest country and generally it is an area not over- populated, which gives the feel of being ‘well looked after’.
The Tesi Lapcha Pass is little used by the local population, and is therefore not in good condition, with several areas exposed to rock fall. Contrary to the route marked on the Schneider Rowaling map, there is a new and safer route, which stays nearer the middle of the glacier and avoids the dangerous slabs at Hacha Dubgog. However it remains a high and potentially difficult pass, so due care must be taken. The descent through Thame, Namche Bazaar and the other Sherpa villages is a delightful way to end the journey, and no one is ever in a rush to reach Lukla and the subsequent flight back to Kathmandu. This climbing trek is graded ‘Alpine’.
