The Introductory Meeting

On February 9, 2000, I had to attend a meeting for all prospective C&I grad students.

I got some really interesting information regarding our program.  Most importantly is
fact that I have to pick my advisory very soon -- preferably before I start classes in
September.  My interest lies in economics and secondary social studies, so I have
a professor in mind, but I need to get in touch with him to see if he's willing to take on
                            another student.  :)

We were also told that we were to find the classes we were interested in.  We have to
fill out a form telling all of the classes that we have to take until we get our degree.
33 credits are required, and you can take either the thesis or non-thesis route.  I am
leaning towards the non-thesis at the moment.

There are four classes that are required:
                                    Curriculum Planning (3 cr)
C&I as a Field of Inquiry (3 cr)
                                    Analysis of Instruction  (3 cr)
                                    Urban Education (3 cr)

And here are a few that looked interesting, that I'd like to take:
                                    Economic Education (3 cr)
Curricular Applications of the Internet (3 cr)
Change and Change Strategies in Education (1-3 cr)
Making Schools Work:  Promoting Positive Change in Chronic Problem
                                            Behavior  (3 cr)
                                    Secondary School Curriculum  (3 cr)
Advanced Problems in the Teaching of Social Studies (3 cr)
Developing Curriculum for Gifted Students  (3 cr)
Practice in Curriculum Planning (3 cr)
History of Curriculum Development (3 cr)

There is also one final class, Master's Seminar, that has to be taken after or while
all final coursework is being completed.  In other words, you can take it *with* other
classes, you just can't have any more classes to take afterwards.

If you are a full-time teacher, you are not allowed to take more than four credits
in any given semester;  there is no limit (full-time students are 9 credits) for students
working but not as a teacher.

There are also grade requirements:  you must maintain a "B" or better average -- if
you fall below a 3.0 grade point average, you can be dismissed from the program.

                            I'm excited, but nervous.  It's cool.  ;)
